I have a S& W K22 target masterpiece with an additional 22 mag cylinder. The gun has a lot of bluing wear but otherwise solid the 22 Mag cylinder is like new.
I am simplifying my collection and wonder if the 22w mag cylinder has any value alone or does the gun and cylinder have more value together???
Would the cylinder fit other smiths??

Cylinders have to be fitted to the gun, and if yours was in fact factory fitted, it should stay with the gun. Check under the ejector star for a matching serial number to the gun itself.

It would very likely not just "drop in" another K-22 of a different vintage and fit or work correctly.

I would think twice about fitting the mag cylinder to the K-22. the 22 mag uses a .224 diameter bullet and could cause pressure problems if fired in a 22 long rifle barrel. convertible revolvers normally use the 22mag barrel and the 22 long rifle bullet will slug up to seal with the mag barrel

serial numbers are not the same 878601 on the cylinder but 309xxx on the gun. the mag cylinder looks unfired.

The data i found shows the 22 lr bullet diameter at .223 vs .224 for the 22 WMR.

Is that .001 really that important a difference in a 22 LR barrel?

I dont really think thats that big of a deal, at least not according to my ruger Single Six convertible with both cylinders. It fires both, and accurately.

the Ruger has the .224 groove diameter to start with. the K-22 has a .222 groove diameter. S & W would fit a long rifle cylinder to a magnum gun but not the other way around.
