I just aquired an almost new Savage in .22 magnum. I'm a shotgun nut for the most part so the largest rifle I have is a .22LR. This is OK as the population of the area in which I live prevents me from reaching out too far.:( My questions are, what kind of working range can I expect from the .22 WRM and what good or bad points are known about Savage rifles. I have heard they are pretty accurate just not very pretty to look at.

I can't complain about the deal. The guy owed me a favor and decided to pay up with a gun:D

I have owned several 22 magnums. Both Savage and Marlin are very accurate and I have a Savage in synthetic stock. The 22 magnum extends the varmit hitting range. A 125 yard or so shot is my limit on varmits. I stay with the 40 grain CCI HP. Others have had success a bit further. The Savage is a very good rifle. Byron

I will probably use this gun for groundhogs however we have been getting some coyote moving into the area. Any problem with removing some of that problem with this gun out to 125 yds? I assume a good head shot would be needed. Thanks guys you are very helpful.

Ground hogs at 125 yds. will not be a problem for the .22WMR. However, a clean kill on a coyote at that distance? Not sure, but I would think it wouldn't have enough gas.

A coyote is a tough critter.......asking a .22 mag to take one out at 125 yards is a bit much. I have a Marlin 882 bolt action .22mag and its dead on accurate at 100 yards......but I don't think its a coyote gun at that range. It propbably has been done, but I'd want something a little more....like a nice .223!!!!

Agree with above.
Lethal but slim chance of clean kill on song dog.
Easy to hit head but darn difficult to get quick stop....vital spot very small.

I've got some 22 Mag Gold Dot bullets that do 2200fps at the muzzle. Bullet drop at 200yds was barely noticeable.

In my experiance with .22 Mag ammo, I found the cheaper stuff to be more accurate. I can't hit the broad side of a barn with CCI Maxi-Mags, but Winchester "Super-X" 40 gr JHPs are super accurate, at least in my rifle (it's an NEF "Ultra Varmit" single shot).

As for range, I'd say 100 yards, maybe a little more. Much better than .22 LR...

I'm thinking of getting a .22 magnum also, for the express purpose of taking my varmit range out to the 100 yd +_ range.
Does anybody have rifle recommendations (bolt-action)?
Will be adding scope to it.

As stated I have a Marlin 882 bolt action .22mag with an inexpensive 4x scope on it. It absolutely loves Winchester .22mag hollowpoints. It'll stay inside a quarter at 100 yards all day.

I originally bought it for squirrels......but found it makes a great fall turkey rifle here in PA. I've taken several with it.
