I have reloaded and shot the 219 zipper for years. It is one of my favorite rounds and has provided hours of enjoyment. Just this week I aquired a savage 99F chambered for 22 savage high power. I need some information on this cartridge so please post what you know.

I have every speer reloading manual ever made. 219 zipper disappears around the speer#5 manual. 22 savage high power is not listed in any speer reloading manual. Does anyone know why? Does anyone know where I can get some published reloading data?

I have never seen 22 savage high power dies. I prefer RCBS dies. Does anyone know if RCBS makes 22 savage high power dies?

I have researched these cartridges on the internet. Several sources state that the 22 savage high power parent case is 30-30 and other sources claim the parent case is the 25-35. The same is said about 219 zipper. I have been making 219 zipper cases out of 25-35 brass for years. In the photo below, I took a picture of three cartridges (from the left, 30-30, 22 savage high power and 219 zipper). 30-30 and 22 savage high power are very similar and 219 zipper also is very close just a bit shorter. I suspect that 30-30 is the parent case for all three of the other cases (25-35, 219 zipper and 22 savage high power), with the 25-35 cut shorter and the 22 savage high power just necked down to 22 (same length). Does anyone know for sure?

I welcome any history and opinions on these cases and any reloading recommendations you may have. I really cannot begin to imagine why the 22 savage high power was never published in a speer manual.

Thanks for your time.

I figure it might be because the Imp was obsolete before Speer started printing manuals. Or maybe not, Speer made suitable bullets at one time.

Does anyone know where I can get some published reloading data?

Ken Waters did a Pet Loads article on .22 SHP in Handloader Magazine No 106 of November-December 1983; back issue available at:

Midway lists them, although you would have to wait out a backorder.

I agree that they are all in the .30-30 (Actually .38-55.) family. I don't have one but have read that it was usual to form from .25-35 because it was less of a neckdown and had lower brass loss.

Note that .22 SHP is actual caliber .227-.228". Ken Waters said some of the heavier .224" bullets would work ok. I don't know why Speer did not list a caliber that was obsolete before they got into publishing handloading manuals. I cannot begin to imagine why they ever bothered to make the bullets. Or why Hornady still does.

The 22 hi power likely was never in a Speer manual due to it`s odd .228 cal bullet that few companies made. That on top of its obsolescence here by the time the major bullet makers started offering reloading data.
The cartridge is known as the 5.6x52R in Europe, and Norma still manufactures proper headstamped brass for it. There is data for it in the VihtaVouri and Norma reloading manuals.
some dat is available here. http://www.norma.cc/sortimentladd.asp?Kaliber=5,6x52R (22 Savage HP)&Lang=2

FWIW-I shoot a .25/35 M94 Winchester. Actually, it's an Improved (Ackley) in a made-in-1943 M94, that has a 22"barrel, and a 1/2-magazine.
I also shoot a .219 Zipper, oops....Improved in a Winchester M1885 falling-block.
All my cases are formed from new .30/30 cases in RCBS Zipper-forming dies...the .25/35 in two of the dies, and the zipper in all three dies.
They are the trimmed to fit the rifle that shoots them, them fire-formed.
I've always had trouble fire-forming .25/35 and Zipper cases as almost 100% split. .30/30s are softer, I guess.
The case-lengths differ as the engineers didn't relate. Savage vs Winchester, maybe?
You CAN get hold of Corbin to make your own bullets. You'd better be serious about shooting that rifle, tho'. You could get hold of other Imp-shooters, and be their sole distributor for bullets.
If you aren't the kind of shooter/reloader that likes a "challenge," I'd leave it alone. You might try wildcats, instead, lol.
Have fun,
Gene

I have a 5.6x52R x 12ga. (22 hi-power) and it shoots the Hornandy bullets quite well, but these days i just swage my own.

My dies are RCBS and they have served me well, so pick up a set, buy some Hornandy bullets and get your hi-power shooting!

There is an excellent article in the Feb 2011 Handloader magazine on the .22 Savage HP.
It would be well worth your time to search out a copy while there still might be some on newsstands.

Bottom line of the article was:

Parent case was the 25-35, but there was a wide range of case specs for it depending on when and who made them, and they are not all the same rim dia.

Bore diameters were all over the map in the early Model 99's.
.228" - .229" bores are not uncommon, while the only available .227" bullet is the Hornady spire-point.

It is too long to stabilize in the 1/12 rifling Savage used with the shorter original bullet.

Best bet is with cast RN or semi-pointed bullets sized for your bore it seems.

Thanks all for the advise. It looks like I might not be reloading this one. I purchased several boxes of S&B 5.6x52R and they are fairly reasonable. I would have to reload several hundred just to make the die purchase. I guess I will sit back and watch the used market and hope for the best.
