I have a .22 bolt action and i wanted to know, what is the velocity for the .22 birdshot rounds WITH CRIMPED NOT PLASTIC TIPS? And will it have enough power to knockdown and kill small birds?

you can't kill a thing outside of 10 feet with those shot shells.

they're worthless unless you're shoothig rats and mice in the basement

I've killed a squirrel out to about 20-25 feet with one of those shells - but that was just because I hit him in the eye.

Man, that was ugly. By the time I got that squirrel to stop thrashing around I think even my dog was contemplating throwing up. :barf:

Other than a lucky shot like that though... your best bet with that type of ammo would be to sneak up as close as possible, put the shotshell round in your pocket, and throw your gun at the bird as hard as you can.

No, the plastic capped version (CCI makes them) are still extremely short range loads. I have shot rats with them, but once you get past 10 feet even they have very little energy left. The pellets are #12 I believe, and besides spreading out very fast due to the rifling, each pellet carries very little punch.

Ditto the above posters. I think they are intended to shoot snakes: walk right up to them, put the muzzle within ~3 feet and pop 'em. I have shot at mice and rats with them so long ago that I don't even remember if they were plastic crimped or not. Seemed to have no effect on a rat other than to make it run away faster. I shoot pests that size with an air rifle now.

Effective range depends on the firearm. Some are nearly useless over 10 feet. Others can be effective @20-30 ft or slightly more. We used a lot of 22 shotshells to clear out starlings/sparrows in barns. A good shot might drop 3-4 of them at a time. They are a little light for pidgeons except for head shots. The nice thing is that the shot generally will not put holes in the roof metal.

I shot a squirrel with one of the crimped shotshells from about 15 to possibly as far as 20 feet, and was impressed when it knocked the rodent right off the tree (it was in silohuette). I walked over to look at it, and the squirrel jumped up and ran away, apparently unscathed!

I think I prefer the plastic shotshells, as a rule. They seem to hold more shot. That said, they are far more delicate.

# of pellets = 247

I dismantled a .22 Mag shot-shell to count the pellets. Counting carefully, I arrived at 247. How hard they hit? How fast do they fly? I do not know.

I carry these in my NAA .22MAG mini-revolver as a last-ditch effort to save my life, or at least assure that if I die, the BG would have to go to the hospital go get those 247 pellets removed from their face/eyes/neck, etc. Hopefully it would result in a good infection and they too would cease to be. If they lived, let them in in the pokey, after the doctors called the police to explain that "shot".

CCI says their plastic-tipped ones have a muzzle velocity of 1000 fps, for both LR and magnum versions (magnum has more shot). What barrel length that figure is for, I don't know.

About useless

Triesd to use then on pidgeons in my barn (to avoid holes in the roof)...These were the CCI with plastic shot cups, that someone gave me. Shot one about 4 time at 20 ft, didn't even seem to ruffle his feathers... So I gave up and hit him w/ a .22 LR, right through the body, and he dropped like a stone. Might work on REALLY small birds, at REALLY short range, but nt worth the bother.
