So, a friend asked me, and I have no idea, can you run .22 CB/S/L/LR in a rifle chambered for .22 WMR, and vice versa? Specifically, its a single shot H&R break-open chambered for .22WMR, but for the sake of curiousity, I'm wondering if it goes both ways.

Alright then.

Oh, look, google just buried the search result I needed. That is kind of a hard one to google, though. Alright, thanks much.

22 WMR case is larger diameter than the LR. It would likely fire, but the case would also likely burst. You would be looking at possible gas release and chamber damage.

However, there are some revolvers that have optional cylinders that allow replacement of the cylinder and subsequent firing of the magnum cartridge. The are some nominal differences in bore diameter on said firearms. Many of the convertable revolvers have slightly larger bore diameters to accomodate the .22wmr bullets, and hence often are not as accurate with .22lr ammo as the dedicated .22lr firearms.

There are also some sleves made, that you put over a LR case, so you can fire it in a magnum chamber. I have some around here, some place?

Many years ago, I tried shooting a .22LR in a Mossberg WMR and the case split down the whole length. Smoke came out the breech. I don't recommend it!!!

IIRC you can take a .22WMR case, chop off the head and stick a .22S/L/LR inside it and it will center and form a gas-tight seal. It's a pain to do for every cartridge and probably not the best for your chamber/throat (& I doubt it's the safest operation), so I'd save that for an emergency.

:)

Well, this went a lot further than I expected. The reason he asked was because his dad bought him the rifle a few years ago, and while he doesn't mind shooting it, the price of .22 WMR is a bit much for him for plinking, so he was wondering if he could just grab some .22lr and run it, since "they're both .22, it should be okay, you think?" Now I know what to tell him.

conversely, something tells me loading a .22 WMR into a rifle chambered for .22lr wouldn't go over so well.

No, it wouldn't go over at all.
They won't even fit in the chamber as they are that much bigger around.

Thank goodness that's the case...otherwise I might not have all ten fingers (or both eyes ). I attempted such in my curious youth, and found that out first hand.

:)

just for fun take fired lr case and push it down into a fired WMR case hand it to your buddy and ask ask him if he ever saw a BLOND bullet

I agree.

If he wants to 'plink' then he should buy a weapon chambered in 22LR. The 22WMR is a hunting round intended to give the field hunter a bit of additional range and power over the 22LR.

He just likes pulling a trigger. He's not really going for range, mostly knocking over pop cans. His kid is turning 5, so cheap ammo is going to be good. I told him to just go out and buy another break-open in .22 if he wants.
