Check your owner's manual. I have seen some .223 rifles that specifically state not to use 5.56 in them. I'd just play it safe a not do it.

How do you even know you are getting the "right" ammo if the box has both .223 and 5.56 on it????

That's the operative question. Perfectly safe in most ".223" rifles, but there is the potential for overpressure in some target/varmint rifles with tight chambers and throats.
