Looking at Cabela's website, I don't see any .223 ammo listed. When you choose which caliber of rifle ammo you want to look at, they don't even list .223/5.56 as a choice. I realize they may not have any in stock, but wouldn't they still list it? Have they gotten out of the business of selling .223??

I was at a Cabelas the other day when a cart from the storeroom was moving 9mm and .223 ammo to the shelves. Customers were taking the ammo right off the cart before it could be shelved. Cabela's is still very much in the business of selling all types of ammo.

Cabela's appears to not list those items which they do not have in stock / cannot get in stock currently. I've witnessed this as well; I had recently ordered and shipped to my house small pistol primers from them several weeks back, and now those same primers cannot be found on their website. I believe it's just the way they choose to list their inventory online - I'm sure if you gave them a call, they'd be happy to give you information on what they carry and what is in stock (although it should match what is on their website). Midway lists inventory a little bit differently, in that you can search through in stock / out of stock backorderable / out of stock no backorder / special order. I have no complaints with either business - both have great customer service in my experience.

Thanks. Haven't been to their store in a few months, and was just cruising their website. I like the idea of actually only listing what you have in stock!

Wow, my local Cabela's has crates of .223 in stock. Independence and Herters. Lacey, WA location. However, they do want $.55 per round for the Independence 55gr FMJ, ouch.

Now that's just goofy.

I just bought 400 rounds of Winchester white box yesterday from the Cabelas website (21-0889 Winchester USA Rifle Ammunition 5.56MM M855 62GR FMJ). I just checked on a lark and there it was so I stocked up and it is not even listed today.

lucky find

I was cleaning under my bed today and found a case 1200 rds of IMI M855 that I must have lost great find in these times:what:

I did find a source for brand name 62 grain .223 rounds, but at $11/box of 20, not sure if I want to pull the trigger on a few hundred or not...

Could you please share this source with us? :)

No longer an issue. Saw it back in stock 3 days ago until this morning, this afternoon they're all sold out. Nevermind...

I saw some .223 ammo on the shelf at Cabelas E Hartford this morning. Not much and I didn't note details. Almost no powder left and very few bullets in non-magnum or non-exotic calibers.

I guess the answer to my own question is that for $11/box of .223, buy it! Then again, they're not going to outlaw .223 ammo any time soon, so in time they should be back up to speed on stocking the stuff.

some stores dont list .223 online b/c they dont know when they will get it in or how much they can get. Some places also like to sell it only to local customers who personally go to the store to keep them happy. Since Cabellas is a chain its probably more not knowing when or how much they can get.

On 27 December Cabela's was taking back orders online so just for the hell of it I ordered 800 rounds (4 EA 200 rounds Remington 55 grain FMJ). Didn't overly need it but was curious as to what would happen. A few days ago I received the following email from Cabela's:

The cost was $300 including shipping so with any luck we will see what happens.

I did notice shortly after I back ordered Cabela's and a few other retailers simply removed .223 from their websites. I give it 3 to 6 months and things should return to normal.

I guess the 2,000 rounds I just bought for $350 was a good deal? :)

Private purchase so don't ask where I got it.

It is the internet sales of ammo that is at risk, could get banned. That is the only way I buy it typically (in the rare occasions I do, I generally reload). The local places around here (other than Wally World, when they have it) charge too dang much for ammo on the shelf.

I seriously doubt it. The quote below is from Bud's Gun Shop facebook page.

"Interesting tidbit from the Shot Show in Las Vegas this past week. Our buyers had meetings with ATK/Federal and Hornady. They are running three 8 hour shifts, 7 days a week, so the machines continue to run 24/7. However, even at full capacity ATK/Federal's current production schedule is already booked into 2015 !! They said current back orders exceed $2 billion (not million) dollars and they received in excess of $500 million in new orders in December...and are on schedule to exceed that in January."

Even when the ammo is ready they will be filling the government contracts 1st.

Thanks for that tidbit. I had not dreamed the back orders ran that deep. Should explain why so many websites have quit even listing the stuff.

Another interesting point is the governments possible move to ban internet sales (mail order sales) of ammunition. That would force many of us to use strictly retailers for loaded ammunition and components likely.

Should be interesting to see how my Cabela's order plays out.

Reading your Shot Show intel, I feel like an idiot. Should have bought 1000 rounds two days ago when I had the chance!

Found some ammo!!! A local supplier did get some 55gr. FMJ American Eagle .223 ammo in. Picked up two cases (1000 rounds) for $325. Thought of buying more, but I didn't want to hoard it all and be one of those folks I get angry with. Thankfully I can use this in both my BCM AR and my new Rem 700 SPS TAC. Ammo looks to be becoming available in dribs and drabs. Now I'd like to find a few boxes of Federal GMM .223 69 gr. for my Rem 700. All in good time.

Of course this is offset by my local indoor range selling Colt 6920's for $3K and PMags for $75, $100 for consignment PMags! At those prices, they have a dozen AR's in stock.

I am beginning to learn that when I see ammo that I can feed one of my firearms, I should go ahead and buy it. A few weeks ago .380 was easy to find, now not so much. .45 is getting rare, and .22 and 9mm are really tough to find as well. I saw some 9mm Estate, 50 rounds for $17. Passed thinking it should really only cost $12 or $13. Thought better of it, went back a few hours later and it was cleared out. Doh! Oddly, when I was out this weekend .223 & 5.56 were both out there for $0.5+ per round.

I had 1000 rounds of 9mm, thinking it was plenty. I'm down to 600 after picking up a new carbine in 9mm, and while that is still a lot of ammo, I can finally see how easy it is to chew through it after a few range sessions. So, lesson learned, and when the fervor dies down, I'll restock.
