Which 55gr fmj bt bullet is better , winchester or hornady ? I am using these for general plinking 100-150 yards . The hornady bullets are just $10.00 more per 1000 than the winchesters . I have used the hornadys before , but not the winchesters . Thanks for any advice .

Your best bet will be to try both and see which your gun likes better. I suspect you'll find the Hornandy bullets are more accurate, by how much depends on a lot of factors.

I found the Hornady bullets better finished, more consistent cannelures, overall just better. If given a choice, and they were priced the same I would probably get the Hornady's with my past experience with them. Been a long while since I shot Hornady, so it's possible the quality has changed?

I've got a bunch of the bulk winchester 55gr bullets and can tell you there is quite a bit of variance in the diameter of lead exposed at the base.

(They still shoot as well as I do though ;) )

FWIW, the Sierra and Lapua are the best .22 FMJ's. Some lot#'s will shoot with match ammo.

The Hornady's are not quite as good as the Sierra's. Occasionally, a lot# will shoot nearly as well as the bulk Hornady 55gr Spt's, but usually they're only slightly better than most of the others such as Federal, Armscorp, Remington, PriviParitisan, ect.

For plinking, ect to 150yds, I'd just use the cheapest. I do.

But, for accuracy such as varminting, you'll do better either with MidwayUSA's "Dogtown", or Midsouth's Varmint's Nightmares......

These have given me nearly as good of accuracy (.6-.9moa) as first quality Sierra's or Speer, or Hornady match/varmint bullets. When I want to shoot sub .5moa, it's Sierras, Bergers, Shilen or Euber match or varmint bullets.

Most of the bulk FMJ's will give 1.5-3moa from my AR, no matter what powder you put behind them. In that case, I use the cheapest mil-surp powders'.....

GooseGestapo has it right. I don't think that you can do any better for the price than Midsouth's Varmint Nightmare bullets for target plinking or varmints.
At less than $39 for 500 you get a pretty good 55gr SP bullet.
The Winchester FMJ just doesn't compare for consistency.

All good points. I like the Hornady better for consistency, consistency = accuracy. I will only use the Winchester if it's a great deal so needless to say I have not used them in a while. If you see a decent deal on Remington 55 FMJ they are nice bullets. They are sort of beveled base, not quite boat tail and shot really well in my rifles. The flatter the base the more accurate at the distances you noted. I re-ordered a bunch from Wideners but they depleted their stock prior to filling my order so I lost out. They stated they are expecting a resupply shortly. Price was seven and change as I recall per 100.

P.S. I just received 1000 FMJBT from Midway as a stop gap until I can find a new source. They were their blemished bullets (look water stained) and the price was great. I swear they are Hornady bullets. Of course their obscene shipping ate up most of the savings so you have to incorporate it into an order making it worthwhile. Bill

P.P.S. I just did a check of both Wideners and Midway, they seem to be out of everything. This is getting out of control.

Just to muddy the waters further check out Montana Golds 55gr FMJ at $82/k shipped they are a great buy and accurate to boot. Between Hornady and Winchster I like Hornady.

Thanks for all the info . I learn alot on this forum . I am going to check out the other bullets that you guys told me about . Thanks , Tom

I bought a crap load of Winchester FMJs years ago because they were cheap and because of the name. Almost turned me against using FMJs in my AR. Then on a whim, I tried Hornady's FMJs. What a difference. Go Hornady and forget Winchester.

That is upsetting because I just bought 1000 winchester fmjbt's. I agree that the hornadays shoot real well for the price.

Winchester 55gr FMJBT are the worst bullets I've ever shot in my Ruger 77V in .223. The Remingtons shoot much better but the Hornady's are my favorite.

Is this a long time issue ? I picked up about 3000 55gr bt winc. from a friend but this stuff must be from early 80's didnt pay a whole lot but maybe I should trade them off its been a long issue with the win.

If you already own Winchester FMJBTs, why not just load up a few batches at various charges and find out whether they will shoot well in your firearm?. Don't simply discount them because of the name without trying them.

Remember, every firearm has different likes/dislikes. The most accurate reloads for my rifle may provide scattergun results in your rifle.

I bought 1k Hornadys for 70. I haven't seen any new FMJ's cheaper. I just bought them for AR fodder so accuracy isn't a big issue. They are nice looking but I haven't leaded any of them up yet. I have loaded up some Hornady 55 psp but havent shot any, they were about 4 dollars more.

Welcome, young man.

You're right about one thing - there are a lot of us who consider ourselves experts :scrutiny: and some of us are right. :p

You can learn a LOT here by reading others' posts, and putting in your own questions. I think we happen to be a pretty handy bunch, and many of us really do want to help less experienced shooters by sharing what we've learned.

WARNING: Mixed in with data, you get a BUNCH of opinions.

In general, I don't think Remington or Winchester bullets stand up to the same standard of manufacturing as do companies who sell NOTHING BUT bullets or ammunition. I'm not saying Rem or Win components are bad - but it's a sideline for them. Not so with people like CCI, Speer, Hornady, Lapua, Sierra... you get the point. You can bet those guys pay very close attention to quality and value - it's their only business. If you read up on world-class High Power Rifle competition, you'll find that the top scores are not given to guys who shoot Rem or Win ammo - more often, they're handloads with bullets from bullet manufacturers..... what does THAT tell you?
