The primer needs to be just below flush with the bottom of the case. I uniform all my primer pockets. The tool allows you to set the depth you need to cut the pocket. It's easy to do and only needs to be done once. My tool is the EJM tool.

For accuracy, trimming makes sense, and is nessesary for consistant crimps, if crimping.

Poor choice of wording on my part. Yes, uniform length is important to accuracy. Longer, but still uniform lengths allow you to seat bullets out further while still maintaining enough seating depth. Longer COALs can also improve accuracy. I still trim to the shortest length in the batch after the first firing.
