First thanks for the heads up on projectiles. I'm a new proud owner of 6K of some nice Hornady's. More than I wanted to spend but at .07 ea. I couldn't pass it up. Now I realized that I've got a powder problem. Just because I like some powders doesn't mean threre available. Please help me with who has what you would buy and why. Now that I got my Wife an AR 15 I have a feeling these might not last as long as I had thought.

I see a lot of H355, BLC2 and W748 at places that carry reloading supplies

H335 is $150/8lbs at powder valley. No limit on jugs as I recall, but 48# limit for each hazmat/shipping fee.

Edit- sorry just double checked and there is a limit of 48# per person, per day.

Try IMR 4198. Its ok for blasting ammo, and it's efficient. For 55 gr loads at 2900 fps, 4198 will make about 50 more rounds per pound compared to H335 or TAC and about 70 more rounds compared to 748 or Varget.

What do you mean by the "best deal"?

If you're talking the lowest cost per cartridge, it's hard to do better than Hodgdon's H4198 or IMR-4198. Both are currently readily available. Under a 55 grain bullet, both reach maximum load around 20 grains (depending on whose data you use) yielding around 3,100 feet per second (24 inch barrel). If you can get it locally and skip the HAZMAT fee, then at 20 grains, a pound will yield 350 rounds at a powder cost per round of about 6 cents.

Hodgdon's H335 at a little over 22 grains gets around 3,000 fps and each pound yields around 310 rounds for a powder cost of around 6.7 cents.

My personal favorite is IMR-3031. I put 22.5 grains underneath a 60 grain bullet and get nearly 2,900 fps out of the 18 inch barrel of my Mini-14. I get about 300 rounds out of a pound for a cost per cartridge of about 7.6 cents.

I find 4198 too fast a powder for the .223.

While there are at least a dozen very good powders for the .223 like:
Alliant AR-Comp, 1200-R, RL-10... Accurate 2015 and 2230... Ramshot TAC... Hodgdon CFE223, BL-C(2), H322...
And others too, my favorite powder for use in .223 ammo meant for an AR platform is H335. For me it works very well.

These are the 55 grain Hornady FMJBT?

Doesnt it matter if you are using lighter or heavier bullets? What bullet are you using?

Anyway, I loaded up 150 55 grain FMJBT with IMR 3031 and felt it was okay, and no different than American Eagle black box. Then I loaded up 50 with some XTerminator I purchased and that was significantly better! I bought the IMR 3031 locally for $28.99 and the XTerminator locally for $25.99. Easily I could get .223 rifle powder for less, so as others have asked are you looking for cheapest or simply quality at the best price?

I've used 4198 with 40 grainers with some success, but IMO 4198 is too fast for 55's. After too much experimenting I've recently settled on H4895 and Varget for 55's and 64's, respectively, w/CCI #400's. Published 55gr start load for the H4895 may be a tad hot...
