I havent reloaded in years. I set my bench back up after years of collecting dust. I ordered 500 rounds of Dogtown 55 gr hollow points, Ive got some Lake City Brass and CCI primers. I need a good powder recipie for a 16" AR....

What powder and load do yall reccommend? Mainly just gonna be plinking ammo, but it may sit in storage waiting for the zombie revolution for a while.

I have an Olympic AR with a 16" Heavy Barrel. I am currently running 25.7 Gr of H-335 with 52 gr bergers with Win SMR primers. This is the most accurate load I have found for my rig.

26.0 grains WW-748 and any 55 grain bullet.
That's been my standard load for 40 years.
Works in anything and is very accurate with good varmint bullets.
Not so much with FMJ, but that's the bullets not the load.

I use some older manuals. Hornady #4 gave 27 grains of 748 and a magnum primer with the 55 grain bullet. Speer #10 exceeds that. As in all data, start with the minimum load and work up. Byron

The old Winchester powder guides, when they were still being published, always said 26.3 grains with a 55 grain was max.

Hodgdon still says the same thing.

No doubt about it, you can go higher.
But what for?

There are other compelling reasons not to go for that very last FPS that nobody can tell is there anyway by shooting them.

I prefer an accurate load a little off the max pressure, bleeding foreskin level.

Easier on the gun, easier on the brass, and easier on the shooter too.

Have gone to 25 gr Accurate 2015. Stellar accuracy, minimum muzzle flash. Dense powder that works well in progressive machines.

IMR4895 is very accurate in .223. 25.5 grains/55 grain Hornady SP is stellar in my mini-14, 10 shots into 2.5". I'm not a fan of ball powder, I prefer extruded.:) I weigh all of my charges on a scale, so powder measure flow is of no concern to me.

My second choice, H-4895.:)

Im just using an old Lee single stage. I guess I could just as easily dug out all the old reloading manuals too. Thanks anyway though. Just wanted to see what the latest, greatist recipies were for 55gr hollow point.

Whats yall's thoughts on the Dogtown 55gr bullets Midway sells. I thought 500 rounds for 30 bucks seemed like a good reason to dig out the Lee press.

I don't have the hollow points, but I tried the SP Dogtown bullets. 25.5grs of Ramshot Tac is what I used. They shot better out of my 1:12 AR. Didn't do too bad with the 1:9. They group better than Hornady 55gr FMJs, but a little worse than the 52gr SMKs. Great bullet for the price.

I use Varget behind my 55gr softpoints in a 16" DPMS AR. It does really well for accuracy. I am max loaded, and don't like to post max charges with so many idiots on the net.

I shoot the Dogtown 55gr SP out of a 12FV Savage 1 in 9 twist 26" barrel with 26 grs 748 it will keep them all in an inch@100yds.
