A long time friend and avid reloader gave me some of his reloads in .223.

He said they functioned in his mini 14, but I just looked on hogdon's site and his load is below the starting load as below:

mil brass
55 gr. amax hornady and 55 gr. hornandy sp
22 grs. varget

Since this is below hogdon's starting load would this be safe to shoot in my ar?

Load one, shoot, and look for a hole:) How many did he give you? If they function, shoot em. If not, hammer them apart, and load a little hotter.

How far below? You usually reduce loads by a grain for mil brass. I show 22.8 as the start from Hornady #7 for those bullets and Varget powder.

Measure the over all length if they are shorter than recommended they will have more punch but may not engage the rifling just right.

They should shoot fine I don't think your going to have any issues Varget fills the case nicely. Those will just be a little slow.

Yep, 22 grains Varget will shoot a 55 grain bullet in an AR perfectly.
Done that a thousand times.

Go have fun.
