Im setting up my new Savage Model 12 .223 rem for hog hunting and was wondering if there is any awesome accesories i can add to it. I already added a bipod.

Have you shot it yet? If not, how can you know what accessories will work? It's a rifle, not a Barbie doll

Depending on which model 12 you have,if it has the factory tupperware stock,I'd say upgrade the stock. It will really help with the accuracy shooting off a bipod or offhand.
If you plan on hunting hogs at night, you might want to get a ND-3 or the larger versions to aid night hunting with optics.I really like mine,it's like having night vision.

My 12 FLVSS with a modified Boyd's Ross Thumbhole stock,Mueller scope with Laser Genetic's ND-3.

BigBCamp,
3 things I find handy on most scoped rifles are sling, scope lens caps and bipod. Even when not shooting from a bipod it is like having a kickstand, but you have that covered.
Besides that a case and a chamber flag. Past that not much in terms of gear. However a like to a have a tool kit for each rifle and a note book to keep info in.

Out of all things the chamber flag is the most important in terms of safety.

Sarduy,
Tell me you did not just post a pic of a buttstock ammo pouch on a Remington in a Savage thread. OH NO! bad things are going to happen.
Just kidding! I was going to bet a Savage but ended up with the Remmy.

Mist,
Of course man! I cant go more than two days w/o shooting it. Im shooting 20 rnds @ 100yds and only making two to three holes in the paper. I guess the question should have been more towards nva scopes and things like that.

Sarduy,
*** A remmy on a savage thread. Really!! lol jk man. Nice remmy. You know im not a big fan of butt pouches.

TXShillbilly,
Im going to look into ND-3 to attach to my Leupold.

Okay so I wrapped it today and also going to order a ND-3 setup and I think I'm going to be good. Was going to go hog hunting tonight but came down with a stomach virus. Heres a pic for ya!

It may not apply to you, but I added a cheek pad to my 12FV. The added height helped with eye & scope alignment.

Where are hunting at bigbcamp? I'm in the DFW area and looking to get into hog hunting myself

Hog hunting with a 223? Not the best idea unless you are shooting newborn piglets...

Really, I don't think the hogs I have killed with a .223 would agree with you and that would be 7 so far all weighing between 250 and 300 pounds dressed and skinned hanging on a meat hook. Also a couple of Elk my cousin dropped with one shot each with a .22 Hornet. A .223 with the right bullets and the right shooter behind the trigger is more then enough to hunt pigs. You have to pick your shots and put the bullet where it needs to go. When I have hunted with the .223 I have passed on shots I was unsure of that I would of taken had I been shooting a .303 or 30-06.

I usually go hog hunting up in Commerce or down in Erath County in Bluff Dale area.

Wow what are you shooting with when you go hog hunting? Ive killed deer with my 22 LR. Its more of a challenge/fun with the smaller caliber rifles. I was taught at a young age to shoot very well by my Grandfather(retired USMC sharpshooter). If you can kill an animal with much cheaper rounds and save more meat then I dont see a problem.

Steve,
I think im going to try that before i buy an Ultimate Sniper Stock. Thanks man. I was almost ready to click buy when i came back and read this thread.

You are clearly a good shot - no disrespect meant.

Many people are not.

As you know, with a decent sized hog you have to make the right shot. I know a few people who won't allow you to hunt hogs with a 22 caliber bullet on their land. They don't like finding them weeks later after they have bled out and the hunter didn't track them down.

off topic, but... a .22 can kill a hog, on the other hand i dont feel like tracking them so 30-06 is the 1st choice ;)

And let's not forget when super-sniper chokes and puts a 22 cal round into a 400 lb pig's mid-section - that piggy's going to be pissed and may well come at you very quickly.

I've shot a couple of medium sized hogs with 22-250 but I wouldn't recommend it to most people. :)

Try 22 LR if you like. I'll send flowers. :D

Yea theres no disrespect and it should be addressed that if youre not the best shot then start prcticing or have a trusty side arm(s) next to you.

That's awesome! Too many times someone posts "Hey! I got a new rifle, what are the cool accessories for it?" Without having fired a shot.

Myself, I like my rifles low drag. I don't like hanging a bunch of crapola on it that doesn't make it shoot better- I've got to lug all that around! For example, when hunting jackrabbits, I don't need a bipod. All I want are good sights (optic or iron sights, depending) and a sling.

Let me turn this around- After shooting your rifle, what do you plan to use it for and what do you think it needs?

PS- If you need some help hunting hogs, let me know. I'm in Louisiana and have an M14 that I think would work fine! :D

Mist,
Great point. I think that everyone should follow that way of thinking. You should fire the rifle and then ask yourself what you need to do to it to make it fire better/ make you shoot better. I really think I'm going to change the stock and go fire it. If theres not a change, then I'm going to go back to the all black synthetic stock. And the M14 cracks me up. I was shooting off some .30 FMJ out of the ole M1 carbine and thought how cool would it be to sack a hog with this. Lol

"Bag" a hog, as in euphemistically put it in your "game bag." Not "sack". Unless you're planning on shooting it in an unfriendly location.

Believe me, the M14 with it's 7.62x51 cartridge is more than enough to sack a hog and put it in the game bag!:D
