How do the various uppers compare? I've seen models from DPMS, Model 1, and Olympic.

I have a Bushmaster that was semi-reliable out of the box. I was pleased with it because it was accurate and I hoped that the malfunctions were teething problems.

They got worse instead of better.

So, I started fiddling with ammo, as .22s can be very ammo-specific. Eventually the thing started firing out of battery, and I decided that enough was enough and sent it back.

The new one (replaced it, no questions asked. I have to give them that) is also semi-reliable, but seems to be getting better instead of worse. It likes the new magazine better than the old ones I had. My roundcount is still pretty low, so time will tell.

If I had it to do over, I would not buy the Bushy. If it clears up and starts running well, I would probably reconsider.

What do you want to do with it?

Range work and plinking. Basically its going to be a training tool to offset the price and demand of .223.

Heard good things about the CZ vz22 upper. I think M1 sales and Midway carries them.

The conversion units are cheap if you don't expect much.

I have nothing but good to say about my DPMS upper mounted on Bushmaster lowers. Very very reliable with just about any ammo, very accurate and some of the best gun money I have ever spent.

The only problem I had was using the upper on a Rock River lower, as it required hot ammo to function just right. It did fine with mini mags, velociters etc. but not the cheap stuff. Talked to DPMS and they felt the mag well/release was probably not cut to spec.

Buy one you will love it.

I've been pretty impressed with the DPMS one I bought a few weeks back to practice with for high-power. I'm not tearing up the X-ring of the MR-31 target by any stretch of the imagination, but when I screw up, the hole's in the direction that I screwed up in, so I'm the limiting factor and it's accurate enough for me to learn. I'm sure, however, the CLE and Accuracy Speaks are really, really nice. Some of the ones mentioned so far (the DPMS, CLE, and Accuracy, possibly others) are designed to mimic a Service Rifle upper, and are quite heavy with float tubes under the hand guards to keep the sling pressure from moving the point of impact.

There's also the Mk261 (I think) insert that uses your upper but changes out the bolt and carrier and magazine, but the rest is the same. Those are substantially cheaper, too. (But I'm happy with my DPMS .22 upp er)

Nate

Edited to add: I haven't used my DPMS with any normal-velocity .22, but it works darn with the blue Federal High velocity ($1.07/50 at walmart), and with Federal's "Auto-Match" that's $11/325 at walmart. Oh, and right now it's on a Bushmaster lower as well.

I actually have a Ciener conversion but want a dedicated upper with a .221 barrel.

I'm building dedicated .22s of all my "working" guns to increase range time and my wallet.

I may pick up a Ciener kit for mine simply because of initial costs. I've fired cslinger's DPMS upper and it's very nice. Unfortunately when I go to DPMS' web site I don't see any .22lr uppers for sale anymore. There's a page for it, but it's empty.

edit: And yet I can find it in the preview catalog page here:

Hmm. I may still buy a Ciener kit, but that is tempting.

Yes, but to borrow a phrase from my Warcraft buddies, I'd have to deal with the Wife Aggro. I can buy a $180 accessory without it raising an eyebrow. An(other) $850 rifle ... :uhoh:

I may pick up the Ciener in the short term and then look into buying the upper at a later date.

I'm just about to buy one in the near future, and was going to go with Kurt's Kustom Firearms.

Heard good things about them on ARF: dedicated .22LR barrel set into a DPMS stripped upper. Takes a standard Ceiner Kit.

It does seem a bit pricey though: $500 for the upper, and then another $120 or more for the Ceiner. And _then_ add a lower.

I've heard really mixed things on the DPMS and CZ uppers.

Will have to go look at CLE and AS...

Ah, great, thanks. Couldn't figure out if it would be a pain to get one through my friendly local FFL in a couple of months, but I think he goes through RSR for a lot of his Glocks/etc..
