It has long been a mystery to me why repeaters with tubular magazines that are chambered for .22mag can accept .22lr longs and shots but a magazine fed .22 mag cant accept those calibers. Is it all an issue with feeding the bullets from the mag or is it something else?

.22 magnum does not use a heeled bullet like .22lr does. so at the case mouth the cartrige is bigger round. Odviously .22mag is longer but it's also tapered compared to .22lr's straight case. Lastly .22 mag has a larger diameter rim than .22lr.

The chamber for a 22LR is longer than a 22 Short, but not fatter. The chamber for a 22Mag is fatter than a 22LR. The bullet itself is actually slightly larger too.

Although quite similar, they are not in the same family of rounds.

Well, krochus said it better than me.

I'll add that 22LRs rattle around in the 22Mag cylinder of my Ruger Single Six Convertible, and 22Mags won't even fit in past the bullet in the 22LR cylinder, even though both rounds shoot down the same barrel when using the appropriate cylinder for the round. It's also my understanding that these guns have a bore that is oversize for 22LR.

Im pretty sure that guns chambered for .22 mag should not fire .22 lr, long or short. The diameter of the bullet is slightly bigger in a 22 mag. 22lr guns with tublar magazines can sometimes use 22 shorts and longs but magazine fed guns ussually can not feed them because of the different cartridge lenth. In magazine fed rifles you can shoot longs and shorts but only if you load the rifle one round at a time directly in the chamber.

LOL I'll admit. I fired a couple of cylinders full of LR in my magnum cylinder before I caught on to why the ammo sounded funny.:banghead:

If you do a search here for Ruger Single Six, you'll find you aren't alone. Not by a long shot. ;)

Myself, I admit nothing. :)

Awhile back I initially thought the 22 short, 22lr and the 22 mag could be fired from the 22 magnum, boy I was wrong. I went to compare the base of a 22lr and a magnum and they looked to be worlds apart. You can fire 22 shorts in a 22lr rifle single shot barrel with no problems. I have to take a gentle reminder every now and then that assume makes an @@s out of ___ and me.

22lr in a 22mag is a no-go.

if your looking for a lighter round to shoot in a 22mag, use WRF (Winchester RimFire). its a good idea to clean the chamber after shooting the shorter cased round. as it will leave powder residue that may cause a normal 22mag round to stick in the chamber.
