So I have been contemplating a dedicated 22lr upper for the ar15, and my research leads me to the dedicated cmmg barrels for the conversion kits. I am curious though, about how well they run semi auto. A lot of stuff I've seen says the conversion kits jam a lot, are the dedicated barrels any better? This is going to be a short barrel for my SBR if i decide to pursue it, but looking for experience and info before dropping the cash.

I've 2 uppers chambered for 22 or one made locally and the other CMMG and both have worked flawlessly. The mags I use are Black Dog and Ciener. Have used standard,HV and 60 gr subsonic ammo in the uppers as well.

I have a CMMG conversion kit and Black Dog magazines I use with a 10.5 inch 5.56 barreled upper. Once I stopped using Froglube, the only stoppages it's had are ammo related and that includes running it fast with the binary trigger. However, precision suffers greatly with the 5.56 barrel.

I just built one using the PSA 22 Upper along with the Redimag magwell converter to run S&W 15-22 Magazines.

I had two FTE the first 100 rounds but then it has been 100% since then with the exception of cheap ammo dud primers(I see the same amount of duds in all my 22s). Mostly been shooting cheep bulk ammo. It has been very accurate so far. I have put almost 1000 rounds through it. I got it as a cheap analog for rifle training. It functions and feel's exactly like my .556. Only difference is the recoil. I love the redimag adapter, the SW mags are great, and much easier to buy and with the converter the bolt hold open functions just like a standard .556 AR.

I went with a complete S&W 15-22 looks like they're running at $325 now, I forgot what I paid but I think it was somewhere around that price.

I bought a CMMG dedicated upper, the barrel is cut for 22LR and it has run perfectly with CMMG and Blackdog mags and drums ... however its been my experience that the drum spring tension slows down about 1/2 way through and sometimes jambs, but the mags are GTG ... I've run everything from Mini-Mags to Thunderbolts and it eats it all with the exception of a occasional Thunder-dud, but that's not the fault of the upper.

Also, its something I'd never thought of until I bought it, the 22 doesn't use the extension tube and Spikes makes a receiver plug that you can use instead and have a pistol without the tube. The top one I made with the plug that came out of my SiG P556 and it's from an SBR so accuracy isn't the best and it has a military trainer 22 conversion in it which works, but also is good for practicing jam clearing!
The bottom is the CMMG and is not only runs better, is beautiful and its much more accurate.

It sounds like the price of the CMMG upper is almost 2x the price of the S&W 15-22 ... so, yeah, it was almost $700 but that being said, the upper from the S&W 15-22 is 16" instead of the 10.5" barrel I wanted ... and it won't fit on my M16! Unfortunately Postimage doesn't support video or I'd show you a short video of it on the M16 but here's a pic!

I have a CMMG conversion and a Spike's Tactical dedicates. Both run well with Black Dog mags and are a lot of fun, but much past 200 rounds we start getting misfires as the fouling builds up and seems to prevent the bolt from fully closing. Maybe better than "bulk pack" ammo would help. but we blow through ammo shooting steel plates so quantity has a quality of its very own :)

My wife's CMMG upper is very reliable.

My Tac Sol upper is very reliable (Well, except for the time I put the hammer spring back in wrong)

My friends M&P .22 AR is very dependable.

Clean them, oil them, use good ammo.

I would like to get a .22LR CMMG dedicated Upper for my AR15, but my little Chiappa Upper Receiver Assembly actually works pretty well.

I do not have a photograph of my 'new creation', but I take the Upper off of the Chiappa M422 pictured above and pin it to my S&W M&P15 and it works better than I expected. It is not perfect, but with CCI high velocity or Federal Auto Match ammunition it is a fun 'plinker' until the .22LR ammo gets it too dirty .
