I've been thinking of picking up a CMMG bolt conversion kit for the M&P, then selling off my SIG 522 .22lr. This would free up funds for a new project.

A lot of ppl seem to prefer building a dedicated upper, but for that cost I might as well just keep the SIG.

I mainly just use my SIG as a plinker and target shooting. It's been super reliable with any ammo and very accurate but it might be time to let it go. How reliable and accurate is the CMMG kit? Will I be disappointed?

Keep your Sig. I really dont care for the conversions, but I do like the dedicated uppers. I had an M&P15-22 and sold it to a buddy to buy a CMMG Quebec-A. It is a mil spec lower with CMMG's dedicated upper on top. It actually is a 14.5" exposed barrel, with a 1.6" internal adapter. So it has the same profile as a true 14.5" M4. It shoots great, but probably no better than your Sig. I will be honest, the Sig is a great rifle and I am a huge fan of it.

Yeah I just recently bought a CMMG conversion bolt and it works okay. One of the magazines was flawless but the other one seemed to jam every 3rd or 4th shot. I am going to give it another go and if it still finicky even with good ammo, start filing and tinkering. It definitely did not seem nearly as accurate as a dedicated upper, although I wasn't shooting precision off a bench. It depends on you and how much you want to shoot .22LR. For me it is nice to just mix it up or teach a new shooter on the .22, I don't hope to shoot a TON of it through my AR, and it is also nice that the bolt can fit in a magazine pouch of the case and swap out in 20 seconds, whereas a dedicated upper would mean bringing a whole other gun. I also got my conversion on sale from PSA for $140. Some of those in the $180-200 range, I could not justify buying when a dedicated upper could be had for just a hundred or so more.

Another vote for keep the SIG522. Most .22LR are 1 in 16 whereas most ARs you'd be using the conversion in will be something like 1 in 7 or 1 in 9, not to mention all the lead bits that could end up in you gas tube if you shoot a lot of .22lr.

whereas a dedicated upper would mean bringing a whole other gun
Not really, just the upper, during the Obama election craziness I was short a couple of lowers, its not a big deal to swap the .22 upper and the 5.56 upper. remove and replace two pins in stead of one, but no messing with the bolt carrier, so IMHO the swap is a wash. The conversion kt is a smaller, I'll grant but most of my rifle cases will hold a complete rifle and an extra upper, but not quite two complete AR rifles.

My plan was always to have one lower per upper, I'm there now and try to keep a spare stripped lower on hand as this part is the "firearm" everything else I can just grab when I find a "deal".

Anyone run one of the conversion kits for a while? How gunked up is the gas tube going to get? That seems like a PITA to clean.
