Can anyone tell me why most 22LR magazines are 10 rounds regardless of the firearm? Be it rifle or pistol, I have not seen a magazine capacity of more than 10 rounds (except for the 10/22). The Ciener conversion for an AR comes with a 10 round magazine. The Kadet conversion for teh CZ pistols comes with a 10 round magazine. I don't get it. Is it that the rim doesn't double stack well? Is it that no one has bothered to try? Probably a dumb question, but it's something I've always wondered.

Rimmed ammo CAN be very tricky to make work in a double-stack magazine.

Now, some models of .22 rifles have tubular magazines that can hold as many as 17 LR rounds
Marlin 99...17
Marlin 60...14 (??)
Nylon 66...14 (no longer made)
Rem Speedmaster/Fieldmaster 16-17

A single-stack magazine over 10 rounds has to be curved...Look at the Butler Creek and other brand mags for the 10/22.

If I don't understand this properly, someone with more knowledge will be along shortly.

You are pretty much on with the rims causing problems.

It can be feeding problems because there can be no tension on the front of the rounds after a certain point.

Or rim-lock problems where one rim gets caught behind the one below it.

Or just all the loose front ends of all the rounds rattling around and driving people crazy!

It can be a problem that can be cured, witness the 20 & 30 round 10/22 mags, and other guns that have been made with hi-cap mags.

I've got 30rd Black Dog mags for my AR Ciener conversion.

I also have a 30rd for my Remington 597. I never use it though.
Speaking of the 597, it has a doublestacked magazine, and I think they went thru 3 different updates on the magazines before they got them to work right.
