.22lr MEGATHREAD

Plenty of vendors were selling 22LR at the San Francisco gun show.

Yes sir there was more .22 ammo then I have ever seen at one time. The prices were very good. Some will complain about high prices but oh well. Shooting is an expensive hobby, if you can't afford try something else.

I saw 50-rd boxes of .22lr "in the wild" at a LGS on Saturday. I don't recall the exact price, but it looked normal, not exorbitant. The LGS had a 1-box/customer sign up, but said that they'd been allowing 2 boxes per customer. As I was not in dire need of .22lr, I told them I'd pass, and leave it for someone who needed it more than I did. The counter guy thanked me for that.

My Tac-22 ammo arrived

And you guys were right...it has some kind of coating on the bullets (not the brass cartridges). I think its a dry lubricant like a graphite. I could be wrong...but here is the result of cleaning 50 rounds with a dry lint free cloth (see picture). I don't believe its an oil or wax because of what it leaves behind. Once wiped off, no more marks so its not from the lead.

450 rounds to go....

Ooooh, that Sierra guy is SO WRONG!

Even the conspiracy theorists are at a loss on this one as they can’t even blame it on the government.

Yes they can! :D Never underestimate the power of conspiracy theorists to blame it on the government!

Here's what the VP at Sierra bullets says:

"Even though Sierra Bullets does not make .22 LR ammo or projectiles, we are constantly asked “Why can’t I find any .22 LR ammo anywhere?” ......... Here are my opinions on the matter, for what they are worth."

That opinion is as valuable as yours or mine.

I know what I deserve for arguing with an all-in, sold-out, dyed-in-the-wool, true-believin' conspiracy theorist ... but I'll suggest that the opinion of an industry leader employed in the business of making ammunition components is worth a whole lot more than mine or yours.

But especially yours. ;)

His opinion on the subject is a lot more valuable than yours (or mine). Please back your statement on how you (or the average THR member) has more knowledge of the workings of the industry or more true connections.

Oh I forgot you probably know a guy that owns a gun shop whose brother in law works for homeland security and knows for a fact that Obama is melting all the 22 brass down for a brass plated black helicopter.

Things are looking up, after 18 months the CMP just received their first full 1000 case pallet. Even though they have a 7000 case back log, 1 of my cases made the cut. That was only a 13 month wait. I'm not a hoarder, wife, son and I shot over 500rds in the past 2 weeks, but my stock pile will never drop below 5000 rounds again. Knew too many people that had to scrounge to shoot leagues last year.

I don't see the problem. Just got in another 2k rounds of mini mags from Cabela's. My "stash" is close to 20k rounds as of today and we have started shooting again as the weather has been pretty nice. We will tend to shoot at least 2 bricks per weekend over the next month or so until it gets so hot that nobody wants to shoot as much.

I hit a large number of Walmarts in my area this week - seems to be a spike in 22LR ammo? Got quite a few boxes of M*22 and (I think) 25 boxes of Federal 550, half of which are already gone (to shooters and their kids).

Many of the stores I hit usually get only 1 case of the 550 - I know 3 stores got 3 cases, and one got 2 or more (didn't see 'em, just going on what the clerk told me).

One of the stores that I've never been able to get 22 ammo in (grumpy white guy always working, denies seeing any 22 in ages, and beats you over the head when you ask) I actually walked out of with ammo in hand today!
I've pretty much given up on this store, as in over 10 trips when ammo is supposed to have been delivered, I never got any.

Since I was in the neighborhood, I gave it a shot (I figured the grumpy old white guy might stick his neck out a little too far one of these days) - a different clerk was working, and when I asked him if he had rolled out today's 22 shipment, he reached under the counter (a no no) and pulled up 3 boxes of 550.

I guess maybe that's where the grumpy old white guy always hid it when he always denied having received any?

How much did you pay ?

A "brick" can mean different numbers of rounds. I know your brick was 550, but this request is for the next 100 or so guys.

Thanks for your input.:)

Finally...

Yesterday success finding .22 lr in quantity and selection. Found a place locally that had almost a full stock of various .22 lr on the shelf and ready to buy and a decent price......50 rd. boxes at around $14 give or take depending on what brand. But this is premium stuff, not no name cheezy .22 - Remington, Winchester, CCI, etc.

They still had a 3X box max buy but the Dude at the counter said if it kept coming regular like it has the last couple weeks they would lift that. He says guys who previously were buying everything they could get their hands on are now leaving some on the shelves as the bleating herd of hoarders has either filled their stashes or made enough money scalping that they are backing off now.

Anyway....I'll keep looking the next few weeks and see if it stays this way before I invest in a .22 lr auto plinker I want for Summer fun. But it looks like the shortage is waning right here in river city.

Finally.

So you paid on average 5 times the MSRP and consider it a good deal? I hope you meant 3 boxes for $14, still too high. Don't pay stupid prices. It only feeds the secondary market.

I bought .380 at $22 a box which was outstanding when locally there was no .380 anywhere 2 weeks ago. I did not buy any .22 - yeah, I hope it comes down as well.

But you have to understand that I have been diligently combing for .22 lr for months now and this is the very first .22 of any kind that has been on a shelf in months. I now have hope where as a few weeks ago I was skeptical about it *ever* being available with choices again.

It's expensive but the shelves were full of choices. At least there was some to be expensive.

Hit a few more Walmarts the other day - picked up 6 more boxes of Federal 550 - swung by a couple of others, but knew I was going to be too late to get any. I didn't, but I saw two empty cardboard cases of Federal 550 in the trash, so those two stores also got 2 cases in with this delivery.

We'll see how long before the next batch of Federal 550s and M*22s are delivered.
Back when I was keeping a spreadsheet of deliveries, the above 2 were being delivered every 2 1/2 weeks, on average - deliveries were pretty consistent.
I thought at the time the shortage might be easing, and stopped building my spreadsheet, as the 22 deliveries were coming so hot and heavy, there was no need to use it in order to (loosely) predict deliveries. Turned out to not be the case, as after that 1 to 2 month spike in deliveries, they dried up.

Only thing that makes sense to me AFA the inconsistency in the supply chain would be an ammo maker swapping a production line over to make something other than 22LR for a spell? If they had a line (or more) dedicated to 22LR only, you'd think delivery timetables would be much more stable?
There's something going on with the supply chain, but other than the theory above, I don't know what would be causing it.

BTW - at one of the stores I visited (first time I've been in this one), I saw their inventory went down BEFORE 7am. When I got to the store and saw there was no ammo (but saw the 2 cases in the trash), I asked the gal working if she handled the ammo - she said she did, so I asked her if the ammo was put out at 7am. She said it was put out between 7 and 7:15am - when I told her inventory showed much of it was gone before I left the house at around 5:30am, she swore that wasn't the case!

Uh huh....

I'm guessing around 15 boxes of the 20 they got in were sold BEFORE 7am - something sucked their inventory down between the time I checked the night before (around 10pm) and 5:30am the next morning!

Needless to say, I'll have to cross this store off my list, as it appears there's a bit of funny business afoot. I'll check their inventory next time to see if it goes down before 7am.

Don't expect to find it on the shelves. I have bought 3000 rounds of midrange European match ammo over the last 6 months at MSRP, less than $6 a box. The highest shipping cost I paid was $5/500. Ammo sales are very much moving from brick and mortar to internet.

match ammo

Works fine..in my case, the Norma match ammo I bought needed a pre-wipe but it was worth it..works fine in my tube fed marlin 60

Still, even non match ammo is readily available for around that price. I don't even think of playing the WalMart game..not worth my time and I have been there once in 7 years..wont support them

Old Sam would roll over in his grave, if he knew what practices are going on there now.:(

You got that right

I could almost stomach everything coming from China..though I prefer MADE IN THE USA...But the way they treat the workers ? No thanks. Someone should open a super store called NOT WALMART, treat the workers right and carry 100% USA made products...a niche store...oh ..and the AMMO sections is always overstocked...:D
