Hi Fellas,

I am having a hard time deciding whether i should go for the .22 Lr or Mag. black widow as a pocket gun. Was wondering what yall vets would have to say about these. Is there really a big difference in the mag compared to the lr as far as power ? I would like to get the Lr just for the fact of the smaller size but am willing to budge if there is substantialy more power with the mag ? Thanks in advance guys.

.22 mag although more powerfull is not worth it out of a handgun in my opinion. May as well get the .22lr for the cheap practice and then a good centerfire.

Black Widow

I have owned this model before. They can be ordered with both cylinders.
It is a really nice gun, high quality materials and workmanship. IMHO it makes a fine extreme hide gun or plinker. I enjoyed mine very much. Plan to get one again soon. Only sold it due to bad need for cash.:(

Also, buy the fixed sight instead of adjustable sight model. The adjustable sights are ungainly, and do not adjust well enough for the different loads you might shoot through the gun. K and D holsters and Pale Horse Leather make great holsters for this model if you find the need for a holster.

Also, the North American Arms web site has good chrono information for various loads. You can see the actual velocity and energy differences for the various models and calibers.

I have a regular 1 5/8" mini in .22mag and I see one advantage to the mag vs LR: the blast and noise coming out of that little thing is pretty impressive and is sure to alert the neighbors...

.22 mag is more flash, bang than performance in a short barrel. I'd go with the LR. I have a 1 and whatever inch barrel NAA mini n a folding "grip/holster" that's really fun and pretty useful, actually. It's no man stopper, but it'll hide any way, any how. I've actually used it to kill snakes, shoot rabbits at short range, etc. It's a neat little well built tool.

Of course, it's not $1000 or more, so many here who believe in the "get what you pay for" thing will say it's junk, no doubt. Anyone who's ever handled and shot an NAA mini is impressed with quality, though. I'd like to have a mini master, myself, just for go anywhere plinking.

Welcome to The High Road.

Go with the .22lr fixed sight model. There is virtually no gain with the .22WMR over the .22lr in snubby revolvers.

Adjustable sights stink on a pocket gun.

I have 2 of the NAA 22 Mag's. One is a 1 1/8 and the other is 1 5/8.

Yes there is a velocity difference between the 22 LR and the 22 Mag, about 300 fps. That is a lot for a small 40 gr. bullet.

That would be like people telling you there is no difference from a .38 special and a .357 Mag in a short barrel. Sounds kind of silly, doesn't it.

Check it out for yourself. http://www.naaminis.com/naaveloc.html

Wow, 300 fps in a 40 grain bullet. Still not much over a hundred ft lbs, not exactly a man stopper for all that flash bang, still an eye socket gun. Actually, at 1000 fps, you'd be pushing about 90 ft lbs.

.22 LR is cheaper to shoot by a good margin and about as effective for any use I can think of, all I'm sayin'. The .22 mag is just not enough advantage to justify the cost of ammo over .22LR and it has the problem of added flash/bang unless you WANT the extra flash/bang. I guess it could intimidate muliple attackers when it went off more so than a .22LR. He might think you're shooting a .38 or something, but I rather don't put much stock in intimidation in a gun fight, not over having a suitable caliber. The mini revolver beats nothing for self defense, but it's not my idea of the perfect PDW by a long shot, not with LR, not with magnum rounds. It's almost a contact weapon, really, screw it in the guy's ear canal and fire.

I chronographed my NAA once, but don't know if I wrote the numbers down. I'm thinking the LR pushed something over 700 fps out of the tiny little barrel, something on the order of 70 ft lbs or something. Wow, whadda mouser. ROFL. I would NOT, however, wanna get shot in the face with it. These little guns, mag or LR, have one virtue, they can hide anywhere and they beat hand to hand or a knife when applied to the face.

I got 850fps from CCI .22 Mag and 950 fps with Winchester .22 Mag. My NAA has the 1+5/8 inch barrel.

Good observation! I get similar differences in my .22 Mag Automag with 3 inch barrel. I believe CCI uses a slower-burning powder; I get an accumulation of unburned powder flakes on the Automag when shooting CCI ammunition.

I have a Black Widow for sale in .22 Mag. Original + Holster Grip included. PM me if interested. Like new.

MCgunner, you are one of them guys the underestimates the 22 cal. Care to be a test dummy and take a few shots from a 22 Mag from a NAA at 10 yards?

I bet you would not do it. Sure it is not a stopping round like a 357 Mag or 40 S&W. But I bet my A$$, it will stop anyone after 5 shots.

But maybe not you, you must be one of the Internet tough guys...lol :neener:

I would get both.

I have the NAA 1 5/8 Mini in .22 Mag. You do gain some extra with the .22 Mags, but the long rifles are more fun and cheaper for plinking. I'm still kicking myself in the butt for not getting the combo version with both cylinders. So if you get both you'll have no regrets. The holster grip is the only grip I found that works for me for concealing. I don't know what the BW grip is actually like but it looks bulky. And all the other grips are too small for control. The folder grip slides in my front pocket like a folding knife with a clip. A lot of people think it's a multi-tool. With practice I can dance a can at 10 yards. you just have to learn that the sights won't help you much and you have to point the barrel at what you want to hit. At least that's my experience with it.

I have 2x mag versions and one .22lr version in the regular models. I'd like a Black Widow and/or a minimaster but the are hard to find in my area.

I'd really like the .22short mini revolver for fun.

Thanks

No its not my first firearm, it is just a little pocket gun i want for my chl. Like most have said it is not a stopping gun, just want a little something for the ankle or pocket, and the occasional "weary" walks to the blind. Btw thanks all for your feedback as a new member here have found it very useful.

22Mag

I Second KevinInPA: "I have the NAA 1 5/8" Mini in .22 Mag. You do gain some extra with the .22 Mags..."

I have the exact same revolver and i like it -- and one DOES gain a bit of velocity with the 22MAG and, besides, you get a real copper-plated bullet; and not a soft lead one. With any smaller diameter bullet out of a short barrel you're gonna want penetration more anything else...

I have the NAA Mini Master with the conversion cylinder for both 22 LR and 22 WMR. I gotta tell you I like having both. I can't exactly say why, but I like the bigger UMPH of the magnum, as it is fun to shoot, but it is also nice to shoot the cheaper LR. I would spend the extra to get the convertible if that is possible. Great little gun. I love to take it on day hikes and such when my .454 is overkill. :)

It's just that in a real self defense situation, drugged up BG with a .357 magnum, I think I'd trust my 9mm +P or even my .38 to kill quicker center mass. You put those 5 .22 mags in him center mass. I'm thinkin' he'll unload on you before he croaks. You want five or 6 .357 magnums from 10 yards in your chest? I'd rather have five .22 mags in mine, personally, might survive it at least.

I do not trust mouse guns to kill FAST enough. Oh, sure, they'll kill with a center mass hit or five, eventually. Put it on his head and it'll kill or stop the attack a whole lot quicker. Put it on his chest and by shot 3, he's got a .357 magum into ya. You want that? One good center mass hit from a hot .357 and you ain't gettin' off round 4 or 5 from that pop gun.

To each his own, but for me, even the .380 is minimal. But, I can get a .380 (P3AT/LCP) that's about as handy as a mini revolver and a better caliber. That don't stop me from owning an NaA mini, though. Nifty little gun for what it is and better than tooth and nail when it comes down to it.
