Hi guys,

I am interested in picking up a .22 revolver (it'll be my first revolver) and have seen a lot of posts regarding the S&W 617/17/18/k-22 series and have personally had tons of fun with a buddy's H&R 999 Sportsman. I will eventually own both models , but do not want to pass up on other fun, possibly more obscure shooters. What else is out there in DA/SA? Thanks for your replies!

Dan Wesson .22's are nice revolvers. They are built on their .357 frame and are very accurate. You can only get them used as Dan Wesson only make semi autos now.

I've got a Smith and Wesson Model 34. I find this little J-frame with a 4" bbl is a perfect fit for my hands. There are also shorter barrel models out there. Mine has grips nearly identical to the ones on gb6491's Model 63.

The Ruger SP-101 in .22LR (no longer made) would also be a good gun.

I do not like single action revolvers, so I can't advise on those, but the Ruger Single Six seems to be the standard among those.

My girlfriend has an old Taurus Model 94...It's definitely a rip off an S&W, but my gawd it shoots nice. Rear site fell off. bought a new one and Loc-tited it on. 9 rounds, very accurate. Can get 'em used very reasonably.

I've got several 22 revolvers. The best shooting one no doubt is the Smith & Wesson Model 17. The reason you hear so much about them is they are that good. You'll pay top dollar but you will not regret it (617 is no doubt just as good, I just like my guns blued.)

Dan Wesson..Close to the Model 17. Very close. Loses a few point for being bigger and heavier, and a slightly longer trigger reach in D/A. The DW is usually less expensive than a S&W but that's changing. If you can find one they're worth a look.

I've also got a Ruger Single-Six and Bearcat, and a Colt Frontier Scout. They're all three fixed sight, "Cowboy" looking guns. A lot of fun at the range, and for plinking. All three are built like tanks and I doubt you could wear one out in a normal lifetime. A lot of people complain about the slow/loading and unloading but I figure what's the rush? I'm in no hurry to get rid of my ammo.

The Colt (not pictured) of course isn't made anymore but there is just something about a Colt. :D

A Single-Six with adjustable sights is probably easier to shoot than my fixed sight one but not as "cool." :)

The Bearcat is a tiny little plinker that doesn't do anything really well, but makes up for it in the fact that's it's so small and light I find that I carry it with me. It's a good little pine cone/dirt clod plinker, but not so good for taking to the range and making small groups with. It will, but it's so small it's kinda hard to shoot well. Short sight radius, small sights, heavy trigger and small grip all work against it. Still as I said, it's the one hanging on a gunbelt, ready to head out. The rest are locked away.

Thank you for the informative replies! I somehow envision my buy list growing rather than replacing what I already have on the list...maybe gun control would be good for my wallet

Why not start with the best? I think you should buy a used S&W K22 in your favorite barrel length. A 6" model 17, or a 4" model 18. I have about a dozen of these from 1938 on up to a 2008 model 617. They are all great shooters, but I find the 617 a little too barrel heavy for my taste with the full lug. You can't go wrong with any of them.
I also have a Dan Wesson with 4" and 8" barrels. I prefer long barrels, so it wears the 8" full time. Even though the gun is big and heavy I find it to be very well balanced. They are getting harder to find though.
Good luck in your search and please come back and show us whatever you choose.

I was in kinda the same search you were about a year ago, Ashcons, and it led me to buying both a S&W Model 63 (5"bbl) and a Taurus Model 94 (4"bbl), both new. I like them both. The trigger pull and hammer-cock is noticeably stiffer on the Taurus, my wife can't even shoot the Taurus in DA, but I don't struggle with it at all. The Taurus feels better in my hand, not that the 63 is uncomfortable.

The ejector on the Taurus is kinda sticky when trying to eject (nine) spent shells. No problem there with the eight-shot S&W.

FWIW,
Les

If you wish to own a H&R 999 Sportsman you better not wait much longer as the price asked on Gun Broker has went through the roof! You can buy a S&W M17 cheaper than the H&R which is a stretch IMO as to how anyone would justify paying those prices. A Ruger Single Six is still one of the best revolvers out there for what they can be purchased at. Love the S&W M17 & 617 and I would like to own a H&R 999 but not at $500.00!

Dan Wesson 722. A 22lr built on a 357 magnum frame. Dang near indestructible and accurate.

To round things out informationally, Colt made a number of excellent DA 22 revolvers. Since 1975 they include the Officers Model Match, Diamondback, and the Trooper Mark III. For general shooting and woods carry, I prefer the Diamondback. The Tropper Mark III or Officers Model Match

The new Smith Model 63 is certainly an interesting option with its 5" barrel. The other Smith offerings have been mentioned. Hard to beat a Model 617 (current production) or either the Model 17 or Model 18.

My 70's-ish S&W 6" Model17 is easily capable of one hole groups. I'm not, generally, but it is! My 4" 1950's .22 "pre-model" Masterpiece is one of my favorite guns. Gotta get around to making better grips for it...

They TRULY do NOT make them like this anymore.

I almost NEVER see a Colt for sale anywhere, .22 or otherwise. There was a Diamondback once at the local gunshop. It sure was a pretty little thing.

My vote is for the Ruger Single Six, with the .22 mag cylinder. It's a great gun, fun to shoot, and rock solid quality.

I like this little Charter Arms "Off Duty" alot. It'll put rounds on a quarter at 30' all day long. I have others, but this one is my favorite.

Yep, Single Sixes are $400, but 617 are almost twice that. Everything gun related has increased in price.
