Hi All,

Looking for my first .22lr for plinking/target shooting, but except for a few Savage models, almost every non-single-shot rifle I see has 4+1 capacity. Ideally I'd find one with 10 round capacity, for the simple reason of not having to reload after a mere 5 shots.

Any other manufacturers I should take a look at? Looking to come in under around $400.

Thanks,
Howard

I have an old Remy 521T and a 10-shot clip is available from Wisners. You could pick a model and look at what's available aftermarket.

Marlin has a tube feed bolt. Model 981T and 981TS, 17 rounds .22 LR.

Bud's $177, ships free.

CZ 452's have an available 10rd magazine. Check out CZcustom for the best prices (shipping included in posted price). The 22lr trainer is an awesome rifle and comes with a 5rd clip at about $330. The 10rd clip would be an additional $25-30. They come standard with a very nice set of iron sights.

The 452 Ultra Lux (not Lux) comes with a 10rd magazine if I remember correctly and is nearly the same as a trainer except a longer barrel, different butt pad, and ???

The CZ's have a reputation for value and accuracy. I own a few and have been very happy. Beyond that, look for a Marlin bolt action with a tubular magazine...like the 783 I think? Best of luck.

I second Geno's suggestion. My first rifle (that I just recently bought) is a Savage Mark II. It was well under $400, and comes with the ten round magazine. I bought an extra magazine online for $15 for a little extra convenience. I know you said "other manufacturers", but it's a great rifle, so no need to look further, in my opinion :-D

Go with a Savage Mark II (I got the Mk. II G with a wood stock for about $200) and buy a $200 scope for it. Leupolds are good, as are Weavers (I personally like the old Weaver K-4 with steel tubes, myself), Nikons or others. I'm a pretty new shooter, but I do know good glass makes a difference.

I have a remington sportsman rifle from my grandfather. They were made in the 40's/50's. Bolt action 15 round tube fed. You can find them on gunbroker every so often. They are good solid accurate rifles.

Ruger 77/22. 10rd rotary mag that doesn't hang out the bottom of the stock, and they will take the 10/22 hi-cap mags if you are so inclined.

I had a Mossberg .22 bolt action that had a 10 round magazine. Paid less than $150 for it new.

See if Winchester is still selling the "Wildcat". It's an imported and 'westernized' Tula TOZ-78. Great rifles!!

Savage MK II, I have the Walmart special (thin barrel and synthetic stock, no accutrigger) and a BV (boyds laminated stock varmint contour barrel and accurtrigger)

BV came with 5 shot mag wal mart special came with 10 shot mag.

BV can shoot like this:

+1 on the Marlin bolt action. I have the older 25N, which has been updated to the 925. Mine came with a 7 round mag, but the post-88 10 round mags work with it just fine. These mags work with the bolts and the semi's like the nice little 795. I love that little 5lb synthetic stock rifle. So light!

The Savage Mark IIBV and BVSS are good options to look at. I have the BV and wouldn't trade it for almost any other .22.

Under $400, I would choose the Savage Mark II with Accu-trigger. As mentioned, 10-round magazines are very available. The CZ's are real nice, but exceed $400 except for the Trainer.

For target shooting, I actually prefer the 5-round mags over the 10's because the 5-rounder is more or less flush with the bottom of the stock. I use 10-rounders for plinking or walks in the woods. Just pick up a coupe of each and you will be pretty well set.

I am a big fan of the tube fed rifles. My Remington 552 will run 15rd of 22lr. My 22 mag is a Marlin 983S and is one of the few 22 magnums that has a capacity >10rd. Only issue with tube fed guns is if they jam you may need to dump the whole tube to clear the gun.

hdrewh, after reviewing all of the posts so far, it would seem that your "search" for a .22 bolt-action rifle having a higher than five round capacity wasn't very intensive. :D

I do know that the CZ's were way cheaper about 3-4 years ago. I have a problem with companies that raise prices just because they can.

I'm sure that CZ has raised their prices somewhat as their quality has been recognized in the US, but much of the price increase is due to the falling dollar value vs. the Euro.

.22-rimfire beat me to it, with really good advice. The Savage Mark II with Accu-trigger, is an excellent shooter. The CZs are also, but have a better fit and finish.

The OP might want to look around for some old used Remington's, Winchesters, or Marlins also. I never really met a .22 LR that I didn't like.

I didn't notice the Ruger 77/22 being mentioned, but you should be able to find a nice used one within your price range. Comes standard with flush-fitting 10 round mags and can likely use any magazine made for the 10/22. I picked up one in near new condition not too long ago for less than $350, including a decent no-name scope.
