Help me justify a new .22WMR. I have a .22lr, a .17HMR, and a .223, so it really doesnt do anything I cant already do. But.....nonetheless interested in getting one. A little help here...

Also, make/model recommendations?

I buy Fiocchi JHP for $6 a box which is about 12 cents a round (much cheaper than 17 HMR and that is not a sale price)...while my HMR and HM2 are fun and .223 can be almost shot as cheap...it is a total riot to shoot out of my Semi-auto but also have a bolt for it. It also "thwumps" like no other RF. Laser-shooting with the 17's is cool but there is something unexplainable about the 22 WMR. Bottom line is it has it's applications with small/medium animals but the reality is they are all great to have.

Get the 22mag! I've shot coydogs with it and the 17s. I'll take the 22mag everytime. Hits harder and doesn't leave the pelts a mess. The 22s is more accurate at longer distances. A bit of wind and the 17s are all over the place.

The warning! Ammo is not especially cheap, even in bulk. Retail at the local Gander Mountain is about 20 cents per CCI cartridge. (compared with 2 cents for .22 LR).

But I love it! I have a Marlin 925M (bolt-action) and it's a blast. It is more than accurate enough for me (my first shot ever with it was the head of a squirrel at about 40 yards). They shoot decently far and quite flat, which can be useful for a lot of things. You can get a totally nice bolt-action, new, for under $200-250.

They're loud as hell, but there could probably be a great debate about whether that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Cost of ammo would be the only reason I'd say not to, but really I think you should.

I love my .22 mag in the Ruger single-six with the 9.5" bbl.
I don't even shoot .22lr out of it because I have a Buckmark for that, and the Ruger is just flat fun to shoot at longish distance with. I just like having it around, great camp gun. I am able to pick up win brand ammo @ a local gunshow for $5-6 per 50 pack.

your making a simple mistake, since you have a 17hmr, that replaces the 22 mag, from 75yards out to infinity. What you now must have is the 17m2, which will make you never want to shoot a 22lr again. I have 2 of them now, and am getting a cz m2 in about 2 weeks. luuuvvvv 'em. If I was a magazine, I would marry one, and stay attached.

I love the 22WMR round. It is what a 22LR should be! Much flatter shot out a decent distance and still within recoil limits of young or small framed people. Around here the 22WMR ammo is still cheaper than the 17. My Dad has the Marlin bolt action 22WMR rifle that is very nice on coyotes etc. I have a 22WMR/20GA o/u shotgun that is very accurate with the 22WMR rounds. A 22WMR derringer is about the loudest small gun you can have if loud is your pleasure.

Overall good and fun round IMHO. Have Fun!

I have a .223, .17hmr and 4 .22 magnums. Wouldn't leave home without my single shot .22mag. It's good out to about 100 yds. or so on crows, coons, etc. and, in a pinch, will cleanly dispatch a deer (head shot). I don't recommend deer hunting with a .22 mag. just stating a fact that with proper bullet placement it will do just fine.

OH yeah. (I'm not advocating this either! But...) in a pinch, I'd way rather take a shot with a .22Mag than a .22 LR at a deer.

I always had a .22 WMR as a kid. It was a great alternative to the .22 lr for shooting ground hogs. I got older and sold the .22 WMR Marlin because I wanted something more powerful. Well.......It has been a while but I have just purchased a new Marlin 925M .22 WMR from Walmart. Feels good having it again. They can do alot and I think it is one heck of a versatile round in a pinch. Buy one now.................:D

I say go for the mag. While I know the little 17 rounds are supposed to be ""all that and a bag of chips", out here in wonderful windy Wyoming, I think the 22 choices in LR and WMR are better off than the 17 in it's MII and HMR variables. Just my thoughts...

p.s. yes I know it says I am looking for a 17HMR S&W in my siggy, but that's more to fill a void in the 8 3/8" S&W collection. It's a sickness I tell ya, at least that's what the wife tells me anyhow...

I've a CZ 452 in .22 magnum with a 3 to 9 power scope on it, it manages minute of angle off the bench and is my favourite gun. I also have a .17 HMR and a .22LR, again CZs. The HMR is potentially more accurate off the bench, the .22 has a nicer trigger and is cheap to feed, but the magnum just feels right. Buy one.

22wmr. is much more of a real varment gun than a .17, and is cheaper to shoot than factory loaded center fire cartridges.
If you shoot Remington Premier WMR Cartridges, you will have trajectories as good as any .17 rimfire.
Rifle of choice Ruger 77/22

Guess I'll be the voice of dissent here. Why buy a 22 mag?? A 22 LR with CCI Stingers will get you out to about 100 yards for coyotes, etc. You can plink MUCH more cheaply with a 22 LR ($10 for 500 vs. $8 for 50 for 22 mag). I can buy 9mm (and sometimes .38 spl) cheaper than I can buy 22 mag. The noise of a 22 mag isn't much less than a .223, and if you handload, you can reload it for not a whole lot more than the cost of the 22 mag you'll have to buy at the store. I guess my point is, the 22 mag doesn't really do anything that other rounds don't, and the cost is somewhat prohibitive to just plink with. That, plus the fact that the 22 mag has never been known to be an inherently accurate round (insert personal accounts of your brother-in-law shooting 1/2 MOA groups with a 22 mag below!!), makes it a no-go for me.

I'm gonna thread hijack, but....

.17 Remington fireball. Centerfire, reloadable, and 4000 fps from the barrel.

If you need something larger, .221 Remington fireball. I am really in love with both of these rounds.

Again, apologies for the hijack.

Agreed....this is the semi-auto 22 WMR I was referring to. I have two. However as much as I love them I need to warn you of two things...Brno's are addictive and the 611's magazines are kinda spendy. As in $100+ and as high as $185 a piece.) I have a dozen mags and they are easily worth more than my two rifles which aren't exactly cheap either. ($500-$700) They are worth it as they are old world craftsmanship from a by gone era. Cool as heck that they are a semi-auto, magazine fed, take down rifle with beautiful Turkish walnut stocks!

17 HMR is better in the wind than the WMR. Light as the bullets may be, they are more spitzer shaped so the ballistic coefficient comes out about the same as a 40 grain .22 and better than the 30-33 grain high speed .22s. Same (or better) BC launched at least 400 fps faster means less wind drift.
