Anyone have a favorite load for 230 grain Golden Sabre's and Clays? I did a search and couldn't find anything so sorry if this has been covered before.
I shoot alot of clays in my 45, and I dont think you'll get enough velocity out of it, to be effective. I would get the data on Rems site, and try to match it, fps wise. Clays is great for paper punching, but not for a practice defence load.
I assume with the GS you are looking for good velocity and not target velocity. I would recommend AA#5, but others may suggest something else. There are other medium to slow powders which will do a good job. I just have had good luck with AA#5. I also shott AA#2 for medium velocities.
N 310 is too fast for good velocities with the 230 Golden Saber. It is excellent for target velocities, however.
You need a medium to slow powder.
Some where from around Universal Clays to AA # 7 on Hodgdens burn rate chart.
Treebeard, Clays is very clean, soft recoiling powder. I found 3.8-3.9gr to be the most accurate in my P345, shooting 230gr Rainiers. OAL 1.250, .470 Lee Factory Crimp, 730fps.
Cool. I got all kinds of bullets to load up once I get my delivery. I have been using Unique, Bullseye and Titegroup for about a year now so I want to try something different. I have some 230gr. LRN and some Berry's 230gr. RN to try out.
My best load with 230gr Golden Sabres is with 8.5gr AA#5 at an OAL of 1.245".
This is good for 820fps and 2.5" groups at 15yds.
I've not used Clays, But I've tried a lot of Universal Clays with different bullets and was never impressed with it with the heavier 230gr bullets - but it works ok with some 200gr bullets.
This is out of my standard Springfield 1911-A1 Mil-Spec.
I've loaded some 230gr GS using 6.3grs of Unique and Remington 2-1/2 primer in Remington cases and they chrono'd at 863 fps average from my both my Colt Government 1991a1 and Combat Commander. Unique has delivered some of the best velocities in the .45 acp and .38 spl. with published loads in these medium pressure cartridges.
