more or less, the groups you shot are they standing. Was at an indoor range. Longest distance is 25 yards which If memory serves if the rifle is on at 25 it will be at 100, correct?

i always zero mine about 2'' high at 100 for them cold days, then they hit about dead.Generally correct I sight I'm at 25 first to get centered. You might have to adjust hight some at 100. I zero mne for 200 and use bdc recticals or mildot for hold over at longer ranges. It also gives less drop at longer ranges while still allowing a center hold at closer targets.
243 is fairly flat shooting and has enough retained energy for clean kills out to 350 + depending on the bc of your bullet.
On a stool, just arms no rest, tripod, or sandbags.more or less, the groups you shot are they standing.
next timeout try to use some kind of rest, a rolled up towel will even work. even if you shoot at 25yard try to hold steady. On a stool, just arms no rest, tripod, or sandbags.

Hunting on a friend's dad's lease. Think it's about 60 acres. I'll try that out. We will be some sort of shack thing that resembles the local brush and tree area. I don't know if I can go out there anytime soon before the hunt but I can find an out door range to simulate the same kinda occurences you mention.I've got a set of Caldwell shooting bags they are cheap 35 dollars at Walmart. They work well but as Troy said a rolled up towel will work Amy thing to help steady your rifle.
Where are you planning to hunt. Is there any way you could get there to scout and shoot in the field..
I used to go to state game land set up a target and drive .1 mile and set up. My shooting bags and shoot using the trunk of my car as a bench before I bought a folding table and a tripod hunting stool. It would help get you steady and get you used to shooting in wind, as well as shadows, that you will experience during hunting conditions.
.1 mile is about 177 yds and you could set up targets at shorter distances to see bullet impacts over a variety of ranges
do they let you target shoot on any NY state land anymore. i always wondered if i could shoot at some places but don't know. places fo me down here in orange county are getting hard to find to hunt/shoot.I've got a set of Caldwell shooting bags they are cheap 35 dollars at Walmart. so anywhere they say you can hunt, target shooting is ok. ny can be vague on info. i think i try some state land this year, just never hunted it.There are no restrictions that I know of unless posted on the specific area signs. Here there are large wooden signs identifying the area and howuch acreage is available. I was only questioned once by Dec. As long g as you are off of the main road, path and have a proper backstop. That is their main concern.

i am looking now on nys website, there are some smaller areas by me, i just don't want to not go in far anuff and have hunters walk past me. plus with state and looks like you have to get in real early to clam you spot. Not like back when I started. There were 15 to 20 in my party. Now I hunt alone for the most part.

this is where i am thinking off trying, it's 6 miles from me.I've shot a lot of deer following noisy hunters.

there better, the important thing is to get comfortable when shooting. try not to touch the barrel or put to much weight on the forend. was that at 25 again? i would go up 4 or even 8 clicks up on your scope.Second report. Front left target is federal powershock, top right is Remington corelokt. Tried the towel thing... Don't know if I was doing it right it was uncomfortable.View attachment 850578
Yeah it was at 25 yds, I haven't been able to get to an outdoor range they're all super far from me. This was something I can do during the work week.there better, the important thing is to get comfortable when shooting. try not to touch the barrel or put to much weight on the forend. was that at 25 again? i would go up 4 or even 8 clicks up on your scope.
Shooting while breathing out.try to follow through on your shots, lost of shooters do the luck to see if they hit the target thing, that is not good to do. wait one second after you shoot to even move. how are you controlling your breathing, even this close it can produce bad groups.
Tried to level the rifles forearm on the towel couldn't get a good sitting position to look through the scope rightThose groups look better. I second Troy on being comfortable and 4 to 8 clicks should put most shots in the bull
What didn't feel comfortable? You can add more to increase height of the forearm. Even support the buttstock as well..
I let my rifle free recoil on the front bag and support the but stock with my other hand on my rear bag. It really helps to keep steady. Also try and keep the front support closer to your action it reduces stock flex in the forearm.
While I'm sure your right about the dry fire practice that is pretty boring but I'll be giving it a try trust me if this thread is of any proof I am taking y'all's recommendations tk heart.Sounds like you need it higher. I had a few other thoughts to use for a rest. Uncooked rice bags wrapped in towels or the leg of an old pair of jeans. The bags would be stackable similar to sand bags.
You can also get free practice at home by dry firing your rifle. It will give an opportunity to practice shooting skills without cost of ammo, a trip to the range and recoil.
