.243 rate of twist question

Several rifles I'm looking at in .243 have a 1 in 10 twist rate: Tikka, Browning and CZ.

I notice that Remington and Savage go with an even slower ~ 1 in 9 rate of twist.

Just so I'm certain: from your experience, a 1 in 10 twist rate in .243 will stabilize a 95-100 grain bullet perfectly well, correct? I'm going to use this for deer hunting ... my research indicates this to be true.

Your 1 in 10 will be just fine.

The 1:10 twist will work for hunting bullets in that weight, over 100 grainis might be a problem, and I'm not sure the VLD bullets would like that slow a twist. But those are usually only used for long range paper punching.

Just to add, I prefer the faster twist, but I mostly use my .243 Savage for long range paper punching.

I have had the exact opposite experience. One on my Savage .243's (1 in 9) turns 100gr Spbt's fine, but will not accurately shoot anything lighter than 80grs. The faster twist is for heavy bullets IMHO. I would like the 1 in 9, but the rifles you named are plenty accurate with the 1 in 10. Unless you plan on shooting the 55gr NBT's either will be fine.

100 or over, I'd go with the 1 in 9 or faster. 1 in 10 and slower is
for lighter, small game or shorter range target loads, so I've heard.

Depends on your application.

1 in 10 will stabilize 100 grain bullets just fine as long as the velocity is at least 2,800 fps.

To be exact...Remington's twist rate is 1 in 9 1/8", and it works better on shorter barreled rifles and the heavier bullets.


243 bullets are a tad on the long side (even the lighter bullets)...in my experience, faster twist is better.

A 243 with a 1 in 7" or 8" twist barrel is on a whole other level...capable of accurately firing 115 grain bullets for well over 1,000 yards (no offense Shawnee...but that is "my game")..but that also means a custom built barrel.

To answer your question...the 1 in 10 will work just fine, as Shawnee said...but 1 in 9 is better if you are going to be using 100 grain bullets.

I would take a 1/9 also. it may have trouble with the 55 to 85 grainers, but above that , all the way to maybe even 110 or 115, should be nicely accurate.

A .243 Win. with a 9" twist will handle anything up to a 105 grain VLD. The 115 grainers will need an 8" twist to stay sobor.

Swampy, Hope you mean "9 1/8" is OK cause I'm gonna buy some 105
VLD's and try them out at 600, my ranges max.

.243 barrels in commercial hunting rifles are made for deer sized game bullets. That'd be 85 grains and up. Even commercial heavy barreled 'varmint' rifles have the same twist. 1 in 10 will be fine with heavy bullets.
"...Hope you mean "9 1/8" is OK..." Yep. My old Cooey has 1 in 9.5 rifling. 105's work just fine. 600 yards is a very long way for a .243 though.
