.243 works just fine for whitetail deer. I have used a Ruger 77 for over 20 years, and it has never failed to anchor what I shoot at.
Any of the various family members of the 7.62 X 51 NATO round are more than adequate for deer.
As long as you do your part, it will do just fine. Stay with the heavier bullets for deer and put them where they belong- you won't have any trouble at all.
I gave my wife a Model 70 Youth in .243 as a wedding present, she got her first buck with it- one shot.
I've cleanly killed dozens of deer with mine.... anything much more is overkill in my opinion... whitetail deer are simply not that hard to kill and well placed shots put them down very quickly.
Everytime I hear some guy talking about his magnum such and such that he's hunting white tail with I just have to chuckle... I've more of them run off after taking a slug from a 7MM mag than I care to count.
The 100grain bullets tend to penetrate well as I've never recovered one.... and I've killed several at 250yds with the bullets passing from one side out the other.
