Does anyone still make the 243 WSSM? Is it history? It was kinda cool with the shorter action. Made for a short light rifle.

I loaded up 20 rounds of .243 WSSM reloads for a buddy of mine a few months ago for his few years old bolt rifle. Seems like a niche round but I'm confident there are a few companies that produce a model or two.

I have a browning a-bolt and I noticed Winchester is the only company making ammo for it. It just concerned me that someday maybe I wont be able to find ammo. Will probably need to start reloading. It is a fun rifle to shoot.:)

"...anyone still make the 243 WSSM..." Winchester. Don't think anybody else ever loaded it. Best you buy as much brass as you can, now. Even if you're not reloading. Not even Winchester makes a rifle.

Sadly it is not going to stick. Short actions are great, super short action never really cought on. I was kind of liking the 25WSSM but when I found out that they could not approch the speeds of the non-magnum 25-06 I decided aginst it. The owner of my local gun store loves his WSSM, but I think I will stay away from it.

The best thing about the WSSM's is that they fit the AR15 magazines. Prior to that, the only way to get an AR in .243 or 25 caliber was to step up to the AR10 platform which is several pounds heavier. Last time I looked, DPMS offers WSSM's off the shelf and several custom AR makers have specialized in them.

If anyone is still making them in bolt guns, don't think they will be for long as the 243 WSSM only beats 243 Win by about 100 fps and the 25 WSSM no better than a 25-06, so stocking up on brass/ammo probably not a bad idea.

Regards,
hps

25WSSM has less performance then the 25-06 for handloaders by a pretty fair margin, about 200fps from what I have read. Now a 25WSM would be a real screamer with 70gr of powder behind it, but probably burn out barrels like the 257Wby.

Olympic arms still manufactures 243 wssm on a ar15 platform. You can purchase a hunting version or a bbl k8 mag, which would be my personal favorite.

That Olympic arms rifle sounds cool. I like the 243 diameter bullets for deer hunting. Its the perfect caliber for Arkansas sized deer. The super short action bolt rifles are handy and I will take the added 100 fps. Its kinda sad the 243 WSSM didn't catch on better. Hopefully they never stop manufacturing ammo for it.
