would it be ok to load up some light loads and seat a 255g cast from the LEE mold backward in the case, i was thinking of using the second driving band as a crimp canalure and loading to 700ish fps with trailboss. pros? cons? past experience? id like to try out a few but want to check up here first.;)

I doubt if you could hurt anything with Trail-Boss powder if you loaded them sideways.

But maybe you should get a Lee 452-252-SWC mold? They ain't that much.

I've done backward bullets with a 44 and a 38, and love the results. Nice round holes, and I can visually distinguish my powderpuff loads from my heavier ones. I seated them just below flush, and put a slight crimp on the case to aid in loading. I think you're fine.

If you want a wadcutter bullet for a 45 Colt,Redding/Saeco makes a block that will cast a 250 gr bullet. They are a special order block but it's worth the money. Mine cast out at .456 and are used in my Ruger 45 Colt revolvers. I load 2 one on top of the other over a charge of 2400 in my 45/70 very accurate out to 50 yds or so.

255's Seated Backwards

I have had a few customers that have seated the 255's backwards. They experienced a clean, cut hole and claimed that the great accuracy at 50 ft. was due to the nose acting as a boattail. This claim I never agreed with as the short range does not allow a boattail to actually function.

thanks for the replies, 6g trailboss and a backward 255g avg'd about 630fps and holes touch at 15 of this 6'5" kids strides so cool, but late friday evening using my standard load of universal and a normal seated 255g i blew the top three chambers off my gun and bent the frame all to hell:banghead::banghead::banghead::cuss::cuss::cuss::banghead::fire::(. ill post pics if interested but im gonna call up kirst and see if i can get a refund or anything like that, between the gun and conversion cylinder about 500 bucks+ down the drain lookin for a ruger blackhawk in the future.

i have no idea what happened, i check powder charges and am pretty strict on my loading procedure, i size all bullets, zero the scale every time i get it out, the explosion didnt even touch me either:) all my loads stayed within max charges, actually always at least 1/2-1 whole grain under max. i got my own little angel followin me around i think;)

kirst converted with loading gate 1858 Remington by F. Pietta

barrel is still in excellent condition and as is everything except the top strap and the conversion cylinder.
i got dialup but ought to be able to post pics in about a half hour

Holy hell 1858rem, glad you made it out okay. Are you certain there was no chance of double charge? Sorry for your loss, I hope you pinpoint the culprit soon so you can get back to the Elysian Fields of reloading.

definatly sure it could have been a double...or a triple or a quardrple in a 45 colt case lol. but im also positive it was no double bacause i just got done reloading after shooting off some backward ones.

heres kinda the order....loaded the 255's backwards to check recoil using 4g trailboss.... good, upped to 6g, still fine and avg about 630fps. had 8 brass to load and 3 empty slots on my belt, loaded up my standard load filled the remaining three shots and put the other 5 in the gun, shot off three at some milkjugs, walked to another spot, pulled the empties and put in the other three i just loaded backed up to about 50 yards after setting up three more jugs, fire one, hit, fire two BOOM, serious tingle in my left index finger almost swear i remember tasting blood in my mouth and checking to make sure there were no holes in my face after seeing the carnage to the gun, i found the third shell to the left of the barrel with the middle blown out, the bullet gone and the primer was still good lol. well i just got tax money back so i think ill look for a blackhawk in 45 colt....they are the ones built on the 44mag frame right?

i dont know what happened though, 8 shells aint hard to keep track of whatch ya doing though.

forgot to mention you dont have to pull back the hammer to line up the sights anymore

I read about inverted wad cutters in a reload book. So... I loaded 148gr wad cutters backwards in 38 special with 3.5gr of Red Dot, but they shot keyholes with 3 different guns. I'm not sure why unless the mass is to the rear of the bullet or the snubbies had too short a barrel to stabilize the round. They even key holed out out of a 4 inch barrel.

inverted wad cutters
i was thinking more along the lines of a 255g round nose flat point turned around base forward to make a wadcutter, if i had wadcutters i think id use them as is lol, but thanks and ill remember this for my next pistol
