As I recall reading, that modification and the then M70 chamber throat gave you the "Three Inch Roberts." with one or another spitzer bullet of the time.
The next step was to lengthen the throat to accommodate the "3.3" Roberts."
Great things were claimed but really more because of heavy handloads and high pressures than the little bit of added volume.
It was once popular to put .30-06 magazine follower and bolt stop in a Model 70 Roberts, too.
