.270 a good caliber for texas hunting?

Well now there are some fools that will tell you if you hunt west of the Mississippi River you need at least a 7 mag or a 300 mag of some sort.
But the truth is if you hunt and shoot well any thing bigger than a .243 Win will do the job.

I haven't met the mule deer I need an 06 to kill. Lots of folks hunt 'em successfully with less caliber/power. No doubt it does the job, though. The .270 to about the .25-06 just seem more appropriate to me on mulies. But, as I have said, I like my .308, so I'm a bit two faced. :D Add to that the Muley I took in New Mexico was with a 7 mag. Texas mulies are desert mulies, not as big as the rocky mountain variety found in the mountains of New Mexico, but they're still bigger than Texas whitetail. My Labrador retriever out-weighs an average hill country doe. LOL!

MCgunner.... I'm not so sure of that... I was visiting my parents in Leakey this last weekend, and I saw a few does that would be pushing the 80 lb mark

LOL

I think I pretty much have at least one of each, and the .270 will take any deer in Texas easily with a 130 grain bullet. It also does the same up here in Michigan's U.P. on 200 pounders with the 130 Gr. N.P.

which part of Texas?
there are thick woods in the east, long flat nuthin in the west, pretty good hills in central, pretty much anywhere you go you could use a different gun, but the 270 is good most anywhere

I should have looked under your name huh? I jest noticed that:D .270 is great, I always hunted with a 30/30 here in East Tex, then we had a trip planned to go to Aspermont then up to Pampa so I bought a model 700 in 7mm mag, a friend of mine brought a .270, we both shot deer at about 300 yards and some a lot closer. Can't go wrong with either one

I'm a .270 lover for life. I'll use it on everything up to and including moose.

yep GTG ... rember man you got guys smokin moose with 55 pound bows:what: a 270 with proper shot placement is gonna deliver the kill every time in north America!

I have seen quite a few elk killed with the 270 and a few deer and well they all died so I say it works just fine. I don't use a 270 cause I have an 06 and I can't see what the 270 can do that the 06 can't but had I gotten a 270 first I don't think I would have given it up for the 06. Great deer round and will work for elk if you get the chance.
