.270 for 800 yard target shooting?

If you really want to shoot 800 yards, consider loading your own. All match ammo is expensive.

While the 270 theoretically can easily do 800 yards, there currently are few match bullet offerings (almost none) and no match ammo. No company currently offers VLD ammo.

Never seen .277 match bullets, they would be very hard to find if they exist. Better off with something in 6.5mm or .30 cal

The pickings for match LD ammo is slim-to-none, but that doesn't mean that it CAN'T be done. It just means that there are easier paths to getting there.
The key would seem to be to avoid the trans-sonic region and be reasonably accurate. I would expect that any 130gr-150gr bullet with a BC over .4 would potentially work. Best I can tell from the calculator, a 130gr bullet at 3100fps and a BC of .4 is still moving at supersonic speeds at 800 yards.
Sierra makes a decent (but not VLD) 135gr OTM MatchKing in 277. Hornady's .277 150gr SST has a BC well over .500 and may be a decent LD target bullet.

There are only a couple of low BC match bullets available in 0.277. The 135 SMK mentioned only has a BC of 0.488, compared to the 175gn 0.30 SMK at 0.508. There's a reason you don't see 270 at LR matches.
By contrast, there is a huge selection of 30 cal, 6.5 and 6mm match grade, high BC bullets. The 260 remiongton or 6.5x55 will do everything the 270 will do at long range, and do it better with equal or less recoil.

The guys are right, the .270 is not a good choice for LR shooting due to the lack of quality high BC bullets.

Sierra is the only company that I know of that makes a "match" bullet in .277. It's a good one. I can hit popcans at 500 yards with my M700 270 when my caffeine levels are low.
Any of the plastic tipped 140gr bullets from Nosler or Hornady might get get you out to 800 yards, but they are hunting bullets not match bullets.
The regular Hornady 140gr BT Interlock is a pretty good bullet out to 500 yards. But once again it's a hunting bullet, not a match bullet. You won't get the consistency and QA of a purpose built match bullet.
FWIW, I'd be trying 6.5mm or 30 caliber just because of the better long range bullet selection.

6.5 cartridges are some of the best for long range shooting. Have some of the best BCs.

I'd get a .260 remington or 6.5x55 swede if I were going to shoot that far. .308 caliber bullets are pretty good too, I just like 6.5mm better.
