I'm about to load for .270 Win for the first time and want to try the Sierra (#1800) 90 gn hp.
I have IMR 4350 and Reloder 15 on hand. Either seems like a good choice. Judging from the manuals 4350 will deliver higher speed, but that's not the most important factor for me.
I wonder if anyone out there has compaired the accuracy with a similar weight bullet. Or, any results from this specific bullet?
I'm new to the forum and just back reloading after many years. I'm really glad to have found this place.
Well, didn't mean to write so much.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
NG

I don't know what manual you referenced but lyman shows the RX15 to be a few hundred fps faster on both ends of the spectrum. I can't give you a comparison because I've never loaded anything lighter than 130's in my 270 with 4831sc. I can say that light, fast bullets will burn a barrel a lot faster than slower heavy ones. Sorry this doesn't really help you.

Welcome to THR, No Good.

Alliant shows 55gr of Rel-15 giving the Speer 90gr, 3511fps in the 270 Win.

Growing up, I had a buddy who only shot the Sierra 90gr out of his 270. I'm not sure what powder he used, as it was nearly 50 years ago. I talked to him a couple years ago, and that is still the rifle and load that he uses. Lots of woodchucks were laid out back then.

Thank you for your answers Gentlemen!
And thanks for the welcome. This is looking like a great place to find and share information.
The data I mentioned is from the Sierra 5th edition- way different from the Lyman.
Sierra puts the max load for Rx-15 at 51 gn for about 3400 fps,
and the max for IMR-4350 at 60.9 for 3600 fps! Yikes!
Their test firearm was a Savage Mod 116 with 1 in 10 twist in a
26" barrel.
This is my first use of the Sierra book, frankly I am leary.
But I checked because it's their bullet!
I have always depended on the Lyman and also referenced Speer frequently
in the past.

I've loaded the serria 90 grain hp in my 270 win. I used H4895 @ 50.0 gr. It pushed it out at 3300 fps , the pressure was good and it had a nickle size group @ 100 yards. I didn't go up any because the group was ok and I only use it for varmits. I got the load data in the Lee book. Hope this helps.

Thanks mhat.
I do appreciate all the input i can get.
I just tried my first load, 47.4 gn Rx-15. (from the sierra book)
That came out at about 2920. They claimed 3200 for that load. So want to increase that.
Want to be around the speed you got if I can.
Then work up loads for 4350 and compare the accuracy.
I've never been into pushing the max envelope when it comes to reloading.

If you would like to compare/cross reference data, I'll list the websites for Alliant and Hodgdon in case you're not aware. Much of the latest current data is available online. There are several new powders recently introduced that boost velocities at same or lower pressures, in many cartridges. You can at least compare for your own interest.
