Hello All,

Has anyone had any experience with the 270 Winchester shooting the 130g Speer Hot Cor in the field on game? I am talking deer, wild goats and wild pigs for my purposes however any experience on game would interest me.

I am loading them to around 3000 fps give or take. Any thoughts on what velocity the bullets would perform best at would help too.

The accuracy is good enough for my purposes either side of 3000fps so that's not really the issue. More concerned with impact velocity and how the bullet performs.

Thanks.

might try the hunting section for this question. velocity is ok for that bullet. don't know how it performs on game, though.

Wow, that bullet has killed a lot of game for me over the many years I've been loading and hunting with it. It has dispatched numerous deer, elk, antelope, and even bear cleanly and at distances out to 600 yds.. I've honestly had difficulty finding another bullet I like as much as that one for the .270 win.

I once shot an elk from behind and ran the bullet straight up the spine, punching through every single vertebra, and finnally coming to a stop at the base of the neck. When I recovered the bullet it was mushroomed very nicely with zero jacket separation. After I cleaned all the bone and tissue off of it, it still retained over 90% of it's weight.

Optics are Leupold VX-III 3.5x10 and the powder is RL-19. But earlier on I used compressed charges of IMR-4350, which is still a book load. I also gave H-1000 a try but found it to be a little too fast burning for my taste. I later switched to RL-19 because it seemed to get the job done with a bit lower pressures than either IMR-4350 or H-1000. Velocity is right at 3,150 fps..

bobnob, I have shot several dozen whitetail deer and mule deer with the 270 caliber Speer hot-cor 130 grain bullet and it has always performed great. In the last few years I have switched to the Speer 130 grain boat tail and it performs even better on deer size game. Top accuracy and great killing power. The boat tail is not quite as heavily constructed as the hot-cor. I still shoot the 120 grain hot-cor in my 25-06 because it is better than the boat tail. BW

Actually, the 130 gr. Hot Core in .277 is a Boat tail. The .284" I'm working with at this time is a 130 gr. Hot Core also, but it is not a boat tail. I thought it was odd that Speer would offer the Hot Core BT for the .270 win., but not in the .284" applications. I just shot the .284" version of the Hot Core today @ 300 yds. and it performed very well regarding group consistency, but we'll see what it does on my up coming hunt next week.

Hey gamestalker, you may be onto something about the Speer boat tail bullets that I am not aware. The latest Speer manual that I have is No. 12 and it says, "Speer boat tail bullets are of slightly lighter construction than their comparable Hot-Cor version and expand somewhat faster. They do not use the Hot-Cor process, so the frontal area of an expanded boat tail bullet is usually larger. Speer boat tail bullets cause greater shock, but penetration is slightly less." I have found this to be true about both shock and penetration. Both bullets are excellent and perform as well or better than the higher priced premium bullets made by their competitors. BW
