I know some people think that a 300 wsm is overkill for deer, but i have a freind that has one and it is a great whitetail deer hunting gun. I am about to get a gun and i have already made up my mind that i am going to get either the 270 wsm or the 300 wsm. So please dont comment that i should get a different gun, because i have already decided. I hunt in Central AR and will mostly be shooting in a shooting lane. I am getting one for Christmas and I am wanting to know yalls opinion. I already know yall will help me so i just wanted to tell all of yall that are posting replies, Thanks.

if you read the stats of the wsm carts, the 270 has the biggest gain of vel/energy/trajectory percentages , compared to all other wsm's. plus the ammo is still cheaper than the 300 wsm's. this is what i would get.

Well, if I cant talk you out of it, the 270 wsm looks to be the best to me. Deer dont care if its a 300 win mag or a .243. The 270 wsm may even be enough for some elk if you ever wanna go.

In your other thread of "270, 308, or 300wsm", out of over 20 posts, the overwheliming winner was the .270. I would seriously go with that over the wsm's you've decided on, I think the majority here would probably agree. Why go with 270wsm or 300wsm?

But, if your mind is made up of just one of these two, then the 270wsm for sure. Less recoil makes for a better shooter usually. And you're not going to run into any situations in Arkansas where you will be undergunned with the 270wsm. I don't think the 300wsm is necessarily overkill, but again, I can't think of a situation where the 270wsm would not be up to the task for what you want to use it for, even if you decided to take it elk hunting.

Given your parameters, .270 WSM gets my vote. You sure don't need the .300 for deer, so if you want a magnum in a short(er) case, .270 it is.

I'm sure you realize you don't probably really need either of those for 95% of your shots at deer in AR.
Now having said that... I suspect you maybe have in the back of your mind to get out west hunting someday, too. (longer shots and some bigger animals).
I live out west and I own a .270WSM and I am very happy with it.
I am a reloader and if I wasn't I probably wouldn't have bought a .270 WSM on account of the cost and availabilty of ammo. I'd probably have kept my regular .270.

The .270WSM does just what I need. It shoots flat and has excellent downrange ballistics.
I know guys who own the .300 WSMs. They tend to own .338s too. They just like "big" guns. :) Nothing wrong with that, either.

For what I hunt (Elk and deer) and where I hunt (sometimes the shots are 3-400yds), the .270WSM is plenty big enough for me.

Short Magnums are a fad and just make getting ammunition harder at the last minute. If you want some exotic cartridge that is brand new, get the Winchester Super Short Magnums (WSSM), because then you really experience a "hunt" when you have no ammo at the last minute and the only place that has it is the gun shop 30 miles across town that closes in 15 minutes.
