I have been looking for a new rifle and I must say that it is dizzing. There are too many choices. At present I have a Ruger No. 1 in 300 wm. Now everything I have read says that to get the best result's from the 300wm you need at least a 26 inch barrel to burn the large amounts of powder that comes with this cartridge. So what I would like to know is if you had a 300wsm or a 270 wsm with a 26 inch barrel would the ballistic's be even more improved over the current listings. I have also read that sometimes longer barrel isn't a good thing. I understand the whole short mag concept, short action, shorter barrel, more compact rifle for packing around. I personally don't mind the long barrel, and if I can increase my performance would be willing to tote the extra weight. All of the rifles I have found so far in the short mags have only 22 or 23 inch barrels. So would a longer barrel be a blessing as far as ballistics or is the extra length just added weight, to make you sweat more. I manly hunt deer, elk, and some bear, so that will be a factor in my rifle choice. The rifle I found with a 26 inch barrel is a Savage model 12. I just recieved the new catalog and it looks like a nice shooter. Never owned a Savage though. What your thought's?
