I'm looking for a new toy.

I was thumbing through CDNN and saw Remington Spartans in 28ga. for what amounts to $400 in my hands. Is this the going rate in some other threads they were cheaper? Are they even worth $400?

What 28s are built on a 28 frame? I've handled a CZ and it was a delight because it was scaled correctly. If I could find a base model CZ in 28 I'd probably do that. The local Sportsmans only has the $1K version.

Options in a SXS 28?

Whats the 870s going rate while I'm at it?

I've got the Spartan SxS in 410ga 28ga 20ga. If I'm not mistaken 400.00 is about the right price for the Deluxe Mod. They have the nickel reciever. The 28ga is made on the 20ga frame. (if I'm not mistaken) I have not had any trouble with any of them. I will tel you this, the finish on the stocks is purely Russian. What I mean is it ugly. I took and sanded the stock down and True Oiled it. Looks like different gun now. Besides being built like a tank thats about all I can tell ya. They shoot well and I've put eneough rounds thru them to prove they can take the punishment.

bratch,

First off.
Whatever you do, do NOT let that sweet gal of yours even hear you say 28 gauge, and for darn sure do NOT let her touch one.

Trust me on this or I assure you , you will be posting :
My gal stole my 28 gauge

Ask Larry Ashcraft for starters...

I'm guessing this is for some small bird, small game, walking the property and fun clay shooting ??

Personally, I am not real happy with the Spartans. The ones I have handled were not as good as the ones Baikel made before Remington got hooked up with them. This just may be a local thing.

I have not handled a CZ.

I tend to handle more 870s, 1100s H&R /NEFs [ single shots], Beretta, Browning and other O/U "Skeet" and bird guns.

Larry has the 870 and Baikel. Smoke_Rizen bought something, and I forget.

For more money, a Ruger Red Label is a neat little package. It is on a 28 ga frame.
SKB used to make one, and these are nice guns, really nice. I just have not looked to see what they have in 28 ga in a bit.

$400, I would suggest adding more money and getting a 870.

I have no idea what I would buy if I were going to buy a SxS in 28 ga, and had only say $500 to spend, I really don't.

If you will recall I went nuts over the Model 12 in 28 gauge...just the old boy wanted $4800.

I still want a Webly&Scot 28 gauge...I look good with this gun.

I know what works for high round counts. Hence the 870, 1100 Red Label and Skeet guns suggestion.
I also know that single shot 28 ga is just a bulletproof design.

870 run ~ $500 - $600 around here.

I have been thinking about getting a 28 ga myself , I have been looking at the Red Lable . But after looking at the price of shells , I am starting to rethink the idea . Anyone know were to find cheaper 28 ga roundes . I would love to shoot the skeet legue with it , but it would cost WAY to much .

Try here. The Rios are reasonably priced and the Estates aren't bad either compared to Remington and Winchester.

I understand what you are saying about the time it takes to reload but the savings realized when loading 28 gauge that I found the time.

PJR,

What are your thoughts on a "Working Person's" 28 gauge?

Being honest, Remington is really trying to tick me off...
OLDer is what I prefer on so many firearms today anyway, including Rem.

Recipes.

Granted I don't really do the reloading these days.
Win 540 is being used up by the bunch I hand with.

Used up meaning I had "pretty large stash" of powders that needed using up, for all 4 gauges.
[Anyone remember 452AA for 12 ga? :p ]

So perhaps what folks are using with new powders, hulls and the like that have come out since Ike was President might be good :D

Steve, it's an interesting question. While we agree on Remington I'd suggest an 870 Express 28 gauge first on price with the Browning BPS second. In an o/u I've been impressed with the CZ o/u and think they are good value.

I load Unique in Winchester AAHS hulls with a Claybuster replacement AAHS wad. This was after a very troubling experience with a bad batch of Federal Gold Medal 28 hulls.

PJR,
Whups!
I forgot about the 870 Express.

I have been sorta "helping" with Older Wingmasters and let that 28 gauge slip my mind.

I keep "hoping" Beretta will come out with a 28 ga semi auto.
Also, I really wish Beretta would come out with a "Working Person's" pump and single shot shotgun, including 28 gauge of course.

Win 1300 used to come in 28 ga and .410 as you know.
Maybe FN will bring these 1300s back.

Federal always required special wads and all not really available locally back in the day.
We had a few folks that did reload Federal, still most of my reloading was with the OLD compression formed AA hull, Blue Magic by Peters, and Remignton.

Then I went full bore into Reloading Fiocchi hulls with Fiocchi components for awhile.
I really really liked Fiocchi's components and they had some super great nickel and copper plated hard shot.

Steve, I used Federal wads and a Unique powder load from the Alliant website. I had frequent catastrophic hull separations. The first half to 2/3rds of the hull would tear apart and exit via the muzzle except for the two times the hull portion got jammed in the barrel. Thank God I checked the barrels of my o/u and wasn't shooting my 1100 at the time.

The one gun I would seriously steer people away from in 28 gauge is the 1100 Sporting. While I like my older 1100 Skeet 28 I've seen many problems with recent production 1100s.

What???
I really like my sporting 1100 28ga., it has worked like an AK, and it is very pretty.
Excellent shotgun, kinda steep price- BTW cannot find any factory chokes anywhere 'cept at the factory:banghead: they want full price.

I know of 6 shooters with recently purchased 1100s in both 28 and 20 who've had ongoing problems with them. The latest was the owner of a 20 gauge Tournament Skeet who had an action bar crack after 500 rounds.

The worst was a 28 gauge Sporting that was constantly chewing up parts. After its second trip to the Remington depot, he was advised not to shoot ammo over 1200 fps because the gun couldn't handle hotter ammo.

Parts breakage on newer 1100s seems far more common that it should be.
