So I'm going on a free range aoudad hunt next month and the outfitter told me that they have a 270 minimum for the aoudad. I'm kinda bummed by this due to the fact I wanted to use my 257wby for this hunt. He insisted that the 120gr. Nosler just might not be enough. So I'm taking my 280. Rem. With the 165gr. Core lockt bullet. Does anyone with aoudad experience have any thoughts on my choice for this hunt? I also considered using HSM 140 with the burger vld just for the fact it's a harder round.

Can't say how it is on sheep but I've seen a lot of elk fall to that load. If I had to pick an off the shelf load for a 280 on BG that would be at the top of my list.

Your .280 with Remington load is plenty good for aoudad. And so would the .257 Wby with 120's.

That was my thoughts I tried to explain how much more velocity the 257 Wby had over a 270 and a 30-06 but be said he wants a bigger bullet... But in my opinion it's not all about the size of the bullet. But in this case he is the boss.

The difference between big horn and aoudad is that the aoudad is an African animal and it's vitals are hid behind the shoulder in most cases you have to brake through shoulder bone.

I'd say the guide has seen enough over the years to have some basis for his demands. I've never taken a guided hunt but I've heard that caliber restrictions aren't unusual.
I know I put limitations on those I take hunting at times, it is usually based on caliber, experience, and terrain.

I was supposed to go on a hunt for them a few years back but it fell through in the end. Did a little bit of research and they def seem to be a tough critter. At the time i was gonna be using a .308 and felt fine with that choice. I have a .280 now and would definitely take that instead (mostly cause of its gorgeous action and chassis), but i was definitely going to spend the money and time to work out a load with a tsx or something similar. The hunts arent cheap and for most of us thats a once in a lifetime hunt. Core lokt is a proven stone cold killer, but for the step up in toughness over deer, id rather err on the side of overkill.
Best of luck
