Just started reloading for 308 and 280 REM. Test fired some 308 loads yesterday and all was well. The problem is when chambering the 280 in a Ruger M77 the round chambers fine but the extractor will not pull the round out so I didn't try firing it yet. The round doesn't stick the extractor just doesn't pick it up. Factory loads cycle fine. I was thinking headspace but was unsure. The rounds were full length sized in rcbs dies and showed the minimum headspace in a L.E Wilson gauge. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It kind of sounds like you move the shoulder back so far that it can't snap over the groove. Back off your sizing die 1/2 turn size then check. Keep adding 1/8 turn till it chambers. If it still chambers back off the die some more. What kind of load do you have in it. Min, max in between. You may need to fire form the brass if over sized that bad.

That's what I was thinking that the problem might have been. There loaded for testing right now with 160gr gameking and 50.7 to 54.2 grains of H4831SC with a published max of 55. The FL die was set up by rcbs instructions and is at the minimum spec on my headspace gauge, can these be fire formed in the rifle as loaded safely or do they need to be disassembled and fire formed by another method. I really appreciate the help. Thanks.

Compare factory rounds & reloads in the gauge. Is there a big difference? Place a fired case in the gage, compare. The resized brass should be about the same or a hair lower in the gauge for proper sizing.A starting load may not expand the brass fully, to the chamber. SAAMI shows a difference of .013" min to max of factory ammo to chamber. http://www.saami.org/PubResources/CC_Drawings/Rifle/280%20Remington%20-%207mm%20Express.pdf Check the diameter of the rim on the brass, to the drawing. Runs from .473" to .463" The extractor may need adjustment?? Try a different brand of brass, maybe?? If rounds chamber, i would fire 1 to see if it can be extracted.

As I have learned so many times in the past... I don't know anything about a .280 in a Ruger 77, but have you checked to see if factory ammunition will chamber and extract; before you start monkeying with your rifle or readjusting your dies. Just sayin'. Good luck and be safe.

OP said Factory loads cycle fine. What is the head stamp and age of the brass. When my father passed away he had a Rem 700 in 280 that was passed to me. He also had a few boxes of 30 y/o Remington loads. The old Rem loads will not extract from a Browning Abolt either factory loaded or reloads. The Browning will cycle anything else fed to it. I now use the old brass only in the 700.
