For all of you out there convinced that there is a liberal conspiracy in our public schools, I thought you might find it interesting to see that there is one major media outlet that is not afraid to offer 2A material for teachers to use:

I used this lesson plan to teach my Senior Civics class about the 2A (Part of my Bill of Rights unit), and I thought it was very good. I even had the dad of one of my students stop and chat with me for quite a while after school one day about how happy he was to hear that his kid was getting some education in this area, which quickly turned into a discussion on Jim Zumbo. It might also interest you to know that ALL my students, and all of the staff know that I am zealously 2A. I made sure to make it clear that I was OK with them disagreeing with me, and they liked the fact that I made my biases clear. In any event, it led to some good discussion, and it was a pretty good lesson.

From my college notes, a discussion of bias in the classroom:

"All professors have their biases. As teachers, the best we can do is be personally aware of them, and disclose them up front....If students are interested in the reasons for the biases, that makes for frank and open classroom discussion. .... We serve no one in trying to hide our biases in a misguided attempt to 'con' people over to our point of view. ... the points of view we hold should stand up to at least a minimum of scrutiny."

Dr. J. C.

Yea, my students are bowled over by my bias.
That is, I expect them to learn the material! (Actually had a student send an almost literate e-mail to the chair complaining just that!).
Teaching chemistry doesn't really open the door to bias a whole lot.:neener:
