smithy, yes a poll like that, or ANY internet site can see where you followed the link from.

It's called 'trackback'

you sidestep it by copying the link, going to a nondescript website (google is excellent, as would amazon.com or something)

then you paste the link in your browser bar and hit enter.

now the trackback won't work as it isn't a link AND some more sophisticated ways of looking at where traffic comes (looking at the most recent cookie in your file, for example) from will see nothing suspicous.
