I don't remember seeing this posted but it's been flyig around e-mail. Take a look.

Hi All,

Please vote this gun issue question with USA Today. It will only take a
few seconds of your time. Then pass the link on to all the pro gun
folks you know. Hopefully these results will be published later this
month. This upcoming year will become critical for gun owners with the
Supreme Court accepting the District of Columbia case against the right
for individuals to bear arms.

First - vote on this one.
Second - launch it to all the pro-gun folks and have THEM vote - then we
will see if the results get published.

There's been several threads on this poll, it's quite old.

Personally I won't vote 'yes' in this because the 2nd Amendment doesn't give the right to bear arms, it merely recognizes it. Government can't 'give' any rights, those are all false (positive) rights. The right to own, carry and use weapons is innate in every individual, it's not up to government to 'give' to anyone.

Perhaps I'd vote in that poll if it was worded correctly.

Joffe is right, and, if you voted "Yes" in that poll, you played right into the hands of the gungrabbers by confessing that you believe the Constitution grants your inalienable rights, as opposed to requiring the government to protect those rights. Sadly, it seems that the vast majority of Americans have fallen into the trap. Bummer, for all of us.

Evidently you can read into what you are voting for however you would like.

The Preamble to the constitution:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

These 'Rights' were written by the people and for the people to follow including the government. It is our job as US citizens to protect and savor the right. It is the Governments job to follow our constitution as that was the intent set forth by the people and which is upholded today. Therefore, you are correct that it is not up to the government to "give" a right. This right was claimed to be protected by the people long ago to last an eternity.

In short summary, the consitution was written by the people for the govt. to follow. I'm not understanding some of the vibes here.

Before I took this poll several months ago, It was definately prefaced with a remark along the lines of "We will be doing a story on this" or some such.

Anyone know when the story will be seen? Anyone interested in finding out? I'm gonna try to write 'em.

Government can't 'give' any rights

That is true. Rights are from God alone; the government only chooses what will be a right, a privilege, or neither, and it is put in to the constitution to protect it from being denied as such. RKBA didn't start with the govt, it was only finally recognized that it is indeed a right, and took appropriate measures to establish the protection of such.

I can see how the 'word trickery' is used here by trying to lower the claim as being originated by the government, but I doubt it would go far playing those types of games. But, sadly, I would not be surprised if it did.
