Today I am going to counter-protest a “Peace vigil†in my neighborhood. A group of anti-war people have been gathering at the park every week during Farmer’s Market for 14 months. They stand directly across the street from the Veteran’s Hall with “Bush Warmonger†signs and the like.
I looked up their website and came across an article that really bothered me and emailed the author. She titled it “I Have Met The Enemy…†She was referring to a retired Navy man who had pulled over to tell her he would not let people like her ruin this country. I was appalled at her language, her attitude and her article.
Her article is here:http://www.solanopeaceandjustice.com/
My response:
Dear Ms. Kneisler,
I apologize for your experience during that rally in Benicia. Although I do not know the man you were involved in a confrontation with, I do know his values. I live in Benicia as well. I also support America being involved in this war.
You stated that you had met the enemy. This man served in the military to protect our liberty. It is that liberty which allows your group to protest war. Under the First Amendment to the Constitution of The United States, you have that right. It is under the Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States that we will protect your right to the First.
You said in your article, and I quote, "Yes, people say that to one another these days in … where was it that I thought I lived? America? The land of Thomas Jefferson? Of mom and apple pie? Of noble, lofty principles? Of goodness, sweetness and light? " This was in reference to foul language that both you and the gentleman exchanged. Apparently you enjoy the liberty of the First Amendment, so why would you disregard the Second?
If you would like a little insight into Thomas Jefferson's world that you miss so much let me give you a quote from the man himself.
"I have sworn upon the altar of God, eternal hostility against every
form of tyranny over the mind of man." --Thomas Jefferson
Please let me remind you about our purpose in Iraq. We are helping to free the Iraqis from a tyrannical form of government. Doing so will ensure our liberties here.
See you Thursday, from across the street, on the Veteran's side.
Sincerely,
Brrlgrrl
I am going to go there today by myself, stand in front of the Veteran’s Hall with a sign that reads, “I Love Veteransâ€. I don’t believe it will make a difference other than make me feel better. I cannot ignore them any longer.
