I really like that labhound. Awsome setup.

Leagly i can shoot were i live, outside city limits, open field behind my house. Problem is houses on left and right.People on the left wouldn't mind, but the guy on the right is,well, lets just say "one of those kind of people" and leave it at that. He don't even like my dog, and she don't bark unless something is out there.

Maybe he'll move and i can make one like that.

My take on that is if someone doesn't like you for no good reason...

... give them a reason.

:)

Good looking range labhound.:)

One never break rule is, you must never allow a bullet to leave your property. Someone elses woods or field is not a safe backstop.

I favor dirt for a backstop.
I shoot a lot of steel but the steel is still backed up with dirt.

Backyard range.

As a resident of the People's Republik of Illinois, I can't even BEGIN to tell you how jealous I am of those ranges......really nice!

In the early 1970's I was offered a great job flying for the state of Illinois.
I turned down the job. One of the primary reasons was Illinois's Draconian gun laws.

I live in IL.

When we finally were able to buy a house in 2007, I traded pizza / fast food delivery, city police and other services, convenient shopping (we have to drive an hour round trip for groceries), fast internet (I pay $560/mo for a T1, no broadband available), and every other convenience of urban life...

For a house that I can shoot off my back deck, a lake I can goose hunt and fish on, and a short 6 minute drive to the local rifle/trap/pistol range with a 300 yard rifle course, two handgun courses, skeet & trap, and steel-on-steel match pits.

Everyone in my family criticized me for "not having my priorities straight".

But I haven't heard a siren in 5 years, never had a problem with anyone stealing my stuff since we moved, and the biggest issue I face on a day to day basis is the constant war between posession of my garbage can contents with raccoons. Oh, and the occasional fight with Bambi over my garden veggies.

Not all of Illinois is bad.

Just the parts with lots of people.

I'd go with clay or a sandy clay myself if its available. The additional structure would hold whatever shape you carve better.

Just a thought, but if you carve a steep face to shoot into you can always add some "improvements" in the form of a couple of posts a crossbar and whatever scrap lumber you can find to "roof over" the target area. span the "roofers" from the clay/sand bank out over the cross bar. Pretty much ought to stop/contain fragments from the steel targets. Make it a lot easier to "clean up the lead" when you sell, too ! >MW
