Could anyone out here tell me how many standard 3" barrel colt pythons were made. I read in this forum that there were a low production of 3" barrel Combat Pythons .

Preacherman,
I called Colt Archive Properties requesting the paper work to fill out. I filled out the paper work along with $175.00 dollars. They sent me a fax cover letter a week later stating it,s originality, and (2) weeks later I recieved a Colt letter stating It,s a 3" barrel colt python.
I still would like to know how many were made.

Congrats on the 3 incher.

If Colt can't tell ya, aint nobady can tell ya.

Gunkwazy,
Thanks for your input in the forums. I guess I will never find out how many were made, but it doesn,t hurt trying to find out.

Heh, Heh, very funny.:neener:

Only Colt knows how many 3" Pythons were made, and for some reason Colt, like a lot of gun companies, have always been reluctant to state how many of any specific model they've made.

To get a gun lettered??? :what:

Gee, they don't need to make guns anymore, just write letters...

Old Fuff,

I don,t smoke or drink my money away, I just spend the interest I made on foolish things like a colt python with a 3" barrel. I know I can get my money back with no problem. Are you interested?

Thanks,
Tolly

Not particularly, especially in a later production Python. No, I'm not concerned about how you spend your money, as that's your business. :)

For the record I don't smoke or drink either - I'd much rather spend my money on fine firearms...

But frankly, I think charging $175.00 to letter a gun is outrageous, especially in the case of more modern ones where the records are quite complete and relatively easy to research.

I considered $100.00 to be steep for lettering a Single Action Army, but I suspect this has established a new bunchmark for the whole industry.

Smith & Wesson offers the same service for $30.00, and sends half of it to support the U.S. International Shooting Team. That I consider to be more then reasonable. :scrutiny: ;)

Aha! I knew we'd eventually find out what Colt's research and development team has been up to!

It's interesting what people charge just to open a book and tell you what they already know.

I don't know if any of you are seriously into cars, but back about 12 years ago, I was looking for information on a specific Corvette. I contacted a small company up in New York called Balwin Motion. The head of operations was/is a man named Joel Rosen.
He wanted $1000.00 in advance from me, just to open his book and confirm that a VIN number on this Vette matched his books.
That $1000.00 would get you a simple YES or NO confirming that his company actually produced the car in question.
For those that don't know, Baldwin Motion was similar to Yenko & Nickey Chevrolet in that they took a standard Camaro, Corvette, Chevelle or Nova and stuffed it with the biggest baddest motor you could buy at the time during the late 60's & early 70's.
Who knows what he wants for the YES or NO today.

Hi dfariswheel,

What I got was a expedited Historial Letter from Colt Archives in (2) weeks instead of waiting (3) months. That was the difference in price. I called Beverely Haynes (Colt Archivist, and she told me there was around 1100 3"barrel colt pythons made.

Tolly

Cool, great info.
Now was that 1100 3 inchers altogether, or 1100 not including the 3 inch Combat Pythons ?

Thanks, Jeff (GUNKWAZY)

Hi GUNKWAZY,
That was excluding the Combat Python. Beverly Haynes (Colt Archivist) said there were approximately (500) Combat Pythons made.

heh heh heh... I knew would could get that info outta you.... and we didn't even have to pay you $175. :D

3" Python

Colt Listed 3" Python's In The 1977 Catalog. Just One Year. My 3" Ser No Starts With "k" It's Not Cut. I Have A 4" 6" 8" . The Story Is A Law Enforcement Group In Ca Wanted A 3' With The 8" Sights. Dsb

FWIW I called the Colt Historical section recently about a SAA. The complete letter was $350, too steep for me considering the gun had apparently been refurbished. They did provide me with some information regarding markings to help identify who would have done the work (i.e. Colt vs. Pvt gunsmith). They were helpful. My suggestion would be to call them with that specific question. You will have to leave a message but they will return your call. Bill
