i'm a recreational shooter i've been watching 3-gun stuff on youtube and it looks like allot of fun. i'd like 2 get into it but i have no idea how 2. i'm not going to just show up at a 3-gun shoot having no idea whats going on do's and do not's ect. lol iI'm in the Upstate of South Carolina. u guys that shoot 3-gun just wondering how u got into it? are there lower level armature 3gun shoots for people like me 2 start out in? i have a nice AR,tricked out Springfield 1911,and a 590 moss berg i know most use auto shotguns but the 590 will have to do while i'm learning...i know theres not much chance of me winning anything just starting out. any information would be greatly appreciated

I suggest trying IPSC ( USPSA), IDPA, or steel plate pistol matches first.

this will give you an idea of how to understand the basic range commands, etc.

I wish you luck in your quest. I'm sure there are experts on the way to give you all the info you need. I'm a bit unfamiliar with this sport so I will be watching the thread...

you'll need a SOLID belt and holster.
(I use a Blade-Tec and CR race holster)

You'll need lots of pistol mags and pouches for them

You need to KNOW your zero

you'll need birdshot and slugs for the shotgun.

3-gun is FUN

I'm not a 3-gunner, but can tell you that there are unfortunately no regular club 3-gun matches in the upstate.

There was recently (Jan 29) a 3-gun match at Belton Gun Club in Belton (surprise) and there is/was talk of making it a monthly match, but nothing further on that front so far. I shot in that one and did have fun. I'd go again if it became a regular event.

There is a regular 3 gun match put on by CCSC (www.ccshootingclub.net) in Edgemoore, a little south of Rock Hill I think. It is a bit of a drive for a club match though... I have never been to this one.

It is a lot of fun. 3 Gun is just slightly more addictive than crack.

You've got to start at some point. Do some research, find out if any of your local ranges hold matches, pack up your gear and go shoot! :)

Or, if you don't want to shoot, just show up and watch.

FWIW, the very first 3 gun match I ever shot was Rocky Mountain 3 Gun.

So far as I know, all 3 Gun matches are open to amateurs. As long as you're willing to pay the entry fee and show up with your gear, they'll let you shoot.

Again, if you're looking to just start out, see if you can find some local 3 Gun matches within driving distance. Those will be your best bet for getting an intro to the sport.

Take what you've got, run what you brung, and see how you do. If you stick with the sport, you may find that you'll want to make some changes to your gear selection, but what you've got should be perfectly adequate for the time being.

Remember, even if you come in dead last, you still beat every single schlub who didn't bother to show up.

Thanks for the encouraging words Justin I'm going to ask around I'm hoping 2 find something either in Greenville SC or Charlotte NC (both with in driving distance)

Don't buy anything (except a holster and maybe an extended mag for your shotgun) until you've shot a couple matches. You'll be able to see what other people use and what works. You have the basics, now go shoot! You'll find most everyone at the matches is friendly and helpful towards newbies.

I've run the northern Colorado "local" 3-Gun match since 2007. We've had a lot of new shooters since then. Besides what Justin said, I recommend contacting the match director of the match you want to shoot. Tell him what you know and what you have, and he'll tell you if there's anything else you need, and he'll give you the safety/procedural information you need as well.

I always give a safety/procedure briefing for new shooters before the match and either mentor them myself or "assign" them a buddy for their first match.

The closest 3-gun match to you is probably a 1.5 hour drive to Bostic, NC. Google for "Walnut Grove 3 gun".

IDPA is closer at a few clubs and matches are open to the public.

Also, there's a Defensive Shotgun match at the club in Anderson this Saturday.

Don't worry about it being your first. go slow, be safe, have fun. Most regular shooters I've met have all been very accomodating to the new guys.

I shot the CCSC 3-gun for the first time today. It is a bit of a drive for me at two hours, but should be at least 30 minutes closer than that coming from Spartanburg. Luckily I was able to carpool with some folks so it was alright.

It was relatively small at 3 stages, but one of those was a pretty long stage with all three guns and some tight off-hand rifle shots (yep, they bit me... know your rifle zero. I've lost big because of this in both 3-gun matches I've shot now). Not being a 3-gunner I can't really comment on the overall quality of the design, but the venue was fine, the people were good, and most importantly it was a good time; I would return if the opportunity presents. The MD also turned out to be an old classmate of mine I didn't even recognize.

I also heard more chatter surrounding startup of a monthly match at Belton GC, which would be a lot closer to Spartanburg, possibly with the next match in March; I will update this thread if that comes to fruition.
