30-06 Based Cartridges

I own a Remington 760, Remington 700, 1903A3, P1917, FN49, and a Garand all in 30-06... which makes it kind of my default favorite cartridge... OK, probably second to the 6.5x55 Swede.

I have always wanted a .35 Whelen... I just have never had any real need for one that would justify buying one. I do have and old Turk 98 Mauser with a pretty crappy barrel that will be my first re-barrel job some day when I get the time. I will most likely go for a .35 Whelen... but might decide on a .338-06.

My favorite 2 are 25-06 and 270 Winchester. With the flatness and serious power of the 270 on Mule deer, I have no need to go to 30-06. 270 is not inadequate in any way for mule deer so I have never bumped up to 30-06 which is also slower.
I don't care so much about ultra sleek high BC bullets because for me its all about the WHOOMP! 130 gr. GKs give you that to 400 yds no problem. Kind of wanting to try some BT hunting bullets and Scirroccos.
I actually get more of oomph from 270 WSM and 257 Weatherby. But 270 works well, quieter, more efficient etc etc. I don't care about efficiency or thrift when I am trophy hunting. If my 257 Weatherby burns 18 more grains powder than your target poodle popper I don't care. I care about laser accuracy and trajectory and, like I said the Whoomp!

338-06 ... is a round that I can’t understand why it never took off ... high sectional density bullets .. perfect for elk & bear

The one regret that I have about a 338-06 is that I didn't have one many years ago when I was doing a lot of hunting in Colorado. For me it is the perfect big game round because it performs at a level much higher than expected. It is accurate and works well in my Winchester Model 70 featherweight with a 22 inch barrel at a weight of 8 pounds 11 ounces with scope and sling. I load my own ammo and it is fun to load and shoot. I can't see why more big woods hunters didn't pick up on this cartridge. Every gunsmith that I know who talks about the round say it is a great cartridge and I have nothing but positive comments. When I started using larger diameter bullets my enjoyment of big game hunting increased.

For a .338-06, this item (https://www.gunbroker.com/item/867617887) has a reasonable "Buy It Now" price. If I was in the market for one, I would give it serious consideration. Especially because I have a soft spot for Mannlicher style stocks. :)
