30.06 Caliber for the M1 Garand

This data is for some of the new guys. Here is the Order that stated the M1 Garand would be in caliber 30.06.
1.Do you know who signed this Order?
2.Do you think this was the right Caliber for US Ordnance to go with ?
Just something for you to look at and study.

I believe Douglas McArthur as Army Chief of Staff signed the order.

Yes, I think it was the right decision.

It probably was a good move sense 5 years later we would have been in ww2 and by then we were still using 03s in the early parts.

But if we did have the capability here is another interesting question. What would the developement of small arms differ then those of today? Would the 308 and 223 and all their shooting platforms even exist?

If we had dropped down to a .276 then I guess it's possible we'd still be there rather than going down to .223, but it's impossible to know for sure. The M1 Carbine was sort of a move in the direction of less recoil and a shorter range weapon.
