Picked up some 30-06 brass which is mixed head stamp, in with the LC brass is some SL brass both year 54 and 56. I ran one of the SL pieces through the sizing die which took some effort, halfway through the die I pulled the case out of the die and noticed that I was increasing the case mouth size by a lot. Found another SL case and the fired case mouth inside diameter is .286 instead of around .310 like it should be. Brass sure looks like 30-06 but the case mouth sure isnt, anyone know what the deal is? Brass is once fired with Mil primer and crimp.

It sounds like someone had formed it into 280 Rem or some other 7mm-06 variant. That's my guess.

Back in the late 60's we pulled military surplus 30-06 ammo that was loaded with military ball bullets, kept the primed cases , dumped the powder and reloaded the primed cases with hunting bullets . All you have to do is remove the decapping pin to do this.
Our ammo looked like military , crimped primer cases with a soft nose bullet.
No reason those cases couldn't have been resized to 7mm - 06 , or 280 Remington aka 7mm Remington Express. Then you would have exactly what you picked up.

I think this is what I have. There are 5 cases that have been reloaded with the smaller mouth and another 5 cases with factory primers and crimps with the small mouth.

I have a couple hundred LC 30-06 cases that are now 25-06 after I got done having my way with them!!
