Just curious to know if anyone here keeps a .30-30 as a "Homeland Defense" rifle for indoor/outdoor use and what choice of ammo you use....

Also, has anyone tested the new .30-30 "Fusion" loadings? How much penetration/expansion does it give? And would you think it would be a good SD choice?....

Thanks in advance.....

I've always used Hornady 170 grain flat point bullets on anything I feel like taking down with my 336. Granted, I've never had to shoot at a person (And hope I never will), but I assume that they will drop just as easily.

I shoot the same ammo I use for hunting, Winchester 150gr Power Point's.

If I were to use 30-30 as an urban SD cartridge, I would choose the 125gr hollowpoint from Sierra. Seat that over 10gr of Unique for about 1800fps. That's like an overpowered 357magnum.

If I could only have one bullet for the 30-30, though, it would be the 170gr Hornady FP. It's just so darned accurate!

i think i would lean towards the lighter end of the bullet spectrum - it reduces overpenetration, and besides, humans aren't game animals - they're varmints.

I second that notion FWIW.

150-170 grain factory softpoint/expanding-type ammo would probably "work too well" if you get my drift.
One of our local LEOs described a recent (homicide) shooting with .30-30 factory hunting ammo as being "very nasty."

I use this bullet over 36gr of Reloader15. Quite accurate, good velocity, good range (for a 30-30), no way to accidently doublecharge the case, and it's suitable for anything on two legs or most anything on four legs that weighs less than 200lbs.

Federal makes a 125gr hollowpoint in .30-30. I clocked it at 2600+ fps consistenty out of a 24" barrel a couple of weeks ago. I recommend that for a factory load.
